Gottlieb is a prevaricating sack of shit. I’m surprised he’s lasted this long. TVT was due to go under years ago, but he got Zwirn’s hedge fund to bail him out.

And to think, this Gottlieb jerk got his start in the music business because his father was Tom Verlaine’s podiatrist (to whom Verlaine owed a sizeable sum). That’s how he got to put out “Television’s Greatest Hits,” and the rest is history . . .

I read an article about Pitbull in a South Florida magazine. One of the most notable things I can recall about that article is that Pitbull is paying money out of his pocket to fund his videos. I just felt bad for the man when I read that.

I have heard more horror stories from artists and industry-types regarding Steve Gottlieb’s way of doing business than of any other single person in the music business I can think of. I feel sorry for these artists who may never see a dime coming to them for their hard work, much less their masters.

Yeah, not clearing guest appearances with artists other labels (specifically Def Jam) was the seed of Lil Jon’s discontent, too. It’s amazing that TVT got as successful as they were as a rap label without realizing that the key to success in that area is to let people on their roster guest on as many other labels’ records as possible, and let someone else effectively do the work of publicizing the brand name of their artists. They also put all their eggs in one basket with Lil Jon and crunk, so when that stuff went out of style, they were pretty much screwed.
