Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights” Video: “They’re Gonna Get It, People Who Are Thinkers”

kanye.jpgLast week we all puzzled over the (hidden?) meanings of Kanye West’s new Spike Jonze co-directed video for “Flashing Lights,” which prematurely ends with a lingerie-clad video starlet (presumably) offing the trussed-up Mr. West with a few quick thwacks of a shovel. Whether or not this is actually the end for ‘Ye–the video’s brief running time has led to much speculation that it’s merely a teaser for a longer clip to be released soon, though this MTV story claims otherwise–the clip as it stands is pretty willfully obtuse, even for a guy’s desperate to cast himself as a Grammy-deserving, capital-A artiste. And it turns out that if you’re still scratching your noggin over what it all means, you may just be too ignorant to hang with the auteur’s vision. At least according to the video’s would-be murderer.

“It’s so funny,” Rita G, the clip’s star, told MTV News about the clip. “This video will go over a lot of people’s heads — and it’s supposed to. I think it’s great that it does. Because Kanye is just on another level; he’s ahead of his time, in a sense. So all the third-graders who come home from school and want to watch videos and snap their fingers and all that, they’re probably gonna think, ‘That video is wack, but that chick got a fat a–.’ And that’s fine. But people in higher positions, they’re gonna see something different. They’re gonna get it, people who are thinkers.”

Wait, are we sure “Rita G” isn’t just Kanye in drag? C’mon, that quote could have come attributed to the man himself, and I doubt any of us would have blinked. (Admit it, you’ve all been waiting for him to start talking in the third person.) And if you are, in fact, dumber than an ass-obsessed third-grader and still just don’t get it, it turns out the “Flashing Lights” video might actually be a magic mirror held up to our inner selves. Like in The Neverending Story.

“I just think it’s great to have a cliffhanger,” she said. “It’s great when the mother goose doesn’t have to chew the food up for you and then feed it to you. Use your mother—-ing mind. It’s abstract. It’s whatever you want it to be.”

This is more embarrassing than the time Bucky Covington called me out for eating oysters with a salad fork.

@Bob Loblaw: Hoooo! A Bucky Covington reference. You, my good sir, are both clever and an astute observer of popular culture. “A salad fork.” Touche!

And I have nothing particularly snarky to say to this post…

    I just hate Kanye.

    Like, hate hate.

    More than I hate Beyonce.

And that’s a lot of hate.

    Hate.

Wait, so the girl who is selling her soiled thongs on eBay in the wake of this video is telling me that I am not very smart if I am slightly confused by said video? Mmmmkay.

“They’re gonna get it, people who are thinkers and also believe women as a whole are evil succubi who are out to take your money and your life.”

Rita G, a Playboy Playmate from Houston, admits that she almost didn’t get it herself.

Odds that this is all an elaborate “emperor’s new clothes” scam by ‘ye to get in Rita G’s pants are pretty close to even at this point.

I wish Kanye would just stop looking at the “drunk and hot” girls and start hanging with nerrrdy chicks… then he wouldn’t have to worry about the integrity of his romantic entaglements. I get it, K. And as much as I love looking at Rita G. and all her lovely wobblies, it’s a bit of a double standard. Sure, the hot women will tie you up and kill you… but what about the other women? What about us???

I don’t think the video really means anything. The purpose is to point out all the dumb people who instead of admitting that something went over their head, just go with everyone else (or Kanye in this case) to make it seem as though they know something that everyone else doesn’t. “You guys’ don’t get it cause you’re not smart, but look at me!! I get it, I’m artistic! See, look.”
