8180_b.jpgIn the aftermath of last Friday’s riot at a Dead Prez show on the campus of Olympia, Wash.’s normally bucolic (and boring) Evergreen State College, where suddenly agitated students flipped over a police cruiser and began lobbing rocks at officers, school officials have banned all future concerts until they can figure out how to avoid a repeat of the kaos. The riot earned Dead Prez a polite “thanks but no thanks” from the next stop on their tour, the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, where students are much more likely to erupt into violence thanks to being forced to live in Tacoma. I was an a big indie-rock festival in Chicago a couple years back and even though Dead Prez was sandwiched between Jon Brion and Bloc Party they totally killed it. Nothing like an crowd of hipster white kids holding their fists up in the air and yelling “black power” over and over again. It was a combination of awesome, surreal and utterly perplexing: kind of like watching Howard the Duck.
