Even if “Falling Slowly,” Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova’s Oscar-winning song from Once, is a little too tepid to be your cup of tea, you have to admit that Jon Stewart bringing Irglova out to give her acceptance speech after the commercial break was a pretty sweet moment, and not even in the “insufferably twee” kind of way that would have probably resulted from a victory by one of the Enchanted songs. (Clip via Defamer.) Plus, the whole thing reminded me how much I liked the quiet, yet intense 2001 album from Hansard’s band the Frames, the Steve Albini-engineered For The Birds. After the jump, the Day of the Dead-themed video for that album’s track “Lay Me Down”:

Even if
Take that Disney!
And +1 on the Frames.
Those Enchanted songs were terrible.
I doubt it would’ve been so sweet if she didn’t have an adorable accent. Just sayin’….
When there’s about 7 seconds left in that clip, there’s an audience shot, and here’s what’s going through their heads.
Laura Linney: She’s adorably cute, I’m sure glad Gary Busey is not around to ruin this for me.
Viggo Mortenson: I’m really not sure what she’s saying, and I am using every facial muscle to help concentrate.
John Travolta: Scientology-worthy? hmmm…nah.
The Once soundtrack jumped to number one on iTunes today. That makes me happy. It wasn’t even in the top 100 yesterday.
I don’t know that “tepid” is a fair classification of that song… I think it’s actually pretty powerful. Then again, I’m a sap. I was in tears at the end of the movie.
Their performance and win was the standout Oscar moment, pure and simple. And their performance of the song on film was one of the year’s movie highlights.
Glen Hansard is great. The Frames’ live album Set List is probably the best proof.
“Falling Slowly” is too tepid? I guess not every song can carry the emotional weight of “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp.”
For The Birds was their high point for me.
I guess it’s no “My Heart Will Go On.”
BTW, for all the party line about how the show’s producer sent Irglova out after the commercial to give her speech, anyone who’s seen the film must secretly suspect that she probably calmly asked who was in charge and then went up to the producer and sweetly harangued him until he relented and gave her time to say her thanks.
@lax_dangerhouse: Hell yes. One of my favorite albums.
great band, great.
crazy to see these tunes get the biggest response at the last two proper NYC Frames shows.
hopefully all the new fans check out the band too.
