I note that you don't mention that Battles at No 1 and Paul Rooney at No 5 are both perfect examples of exciting and excellent new artists / tracks that had Peel still been with us I'm sure would have brought to our attention himself - no nostalgia there.

Dandelion Radio is run by unpaid amateurs and between the 10 or so of us if we can find a quarter of the good new music that Peel used to, then we will have done something useful!

@tristax: Yeah, what you said. Sorry, I'm in grad school, so I take about 5,000 more words than are needed to express things.

People who dedicate themselves to the memory of their favorite DJ probably share some taste with that DJ. Shocker.

Interesting that this list is still MES-dominated, but not too surprising. People who would participate in something that claims to carry on the legacy of Peel are probably not just devotees of "expressing themselves" through musical lists, a la any old music blogger, but fans of Peel in particular, and subsequently, fond of his favorite band.

Coincidentally, I just bought an old NME ad for The Fall's This Nation's Saving Grace, and on the back is an ad for NME compilations tapes - one of standard indie and rock-type stuff, one a Blue Note sampler, and one called "All Africa Radio" - a diversity of genres you would never see NME pushing these days, and surely exemplary of Peel's influence.

it's probably the polling, too. people are voting for their 3 favorite songs will feel obligated to get mark e smith in there because, honestly, these are people that are voting on a site dedicated to a show that had mark e smith on the year-end list, what, over a hundred times? if people had to vote for ten, or even five, the lists probably would have been more interesting. although much more irritating, tallying-wise.
