Mariah Carey And Unicorns: Every Geek's Fantasy(?)

As previously reported, the video for Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body" is something of a big-budget affair, with Brett Ratner behind the camera and 30 Rock's Jack McBrayer as Mimi's sorta-love-interest. McBrayer plays a computer nerd (of course!) who's sent on a house call to upgrade Mariah's wireless, and said scenario results in his mind going off in all sorts of fantastical directions—some of which make me wonder if she isn't making some bizarre play for the Digg crowd and their "viral video" power. She plays laser tag! She races model cars! And the clip not only has a glimpse of Mariah's underwear, it has multiple scenes featuring a unicorn—and her spouting off some technical jargon at the end. The Google hits for the phrase "Mariah FTW" are going to go through the roof by day's end, I tell you. [Dailymotion]

  • I must say, the promotional setup for this single/album have so far been masterful -- worthy of Sony/Mottola in Mariah's '90s heyday. Tacky as the video is, it's got people talking about her, and the campaign seems to register that Carey is now something of a fetish object of both high and low culture. Believe me, I'm no Carey fan, but they've managed to make her inescapable recently.

Prediction: when they release the single to iTunes, she's gonna shoot to No. 1. She might even be the spoiler that ejects Flo Rida before Chris Brown or Rihanna get around to it.

  • "Mariah FTW?" More like "Mariah WTF?"!!!!

  • @Chris Molanphy:

I completely agree with you man 100%. Everytime I hear this song I'm taken back to Mariah Carey post Glitter. Unconsciously. I don't know what it is. I'm not saying I am rooting for the track and video 100%, but it's less in your face and pandering for a young audience/chart success than It's Like That from her Mimi album. [Though those goddamn lyrics beg to differ. "Yooouu Tube! Yooou Tube!"...Ugh].

  • Glad to see MC is recognizing her artistic limitations with this vid. She seems comfortable enough surrounding herself with film directors and tv stars, yet remaining a singer, as opposed to her disastrous turns on the big and small screen (Glitter, Ally McBeal, etc).

I agree with all of the above, this song and vid are easily digestible and neither showcases her upper registers nor her near-nude physique, both of which we are all BEYOND sick of...

  • it's such obvious pandering, but i love this.

  • @HONEYBFLY:

And despite those lyrics and pandering and blah, blah, blah, she seems less at a loss for where to go or what to do next or how to stay on top of her game than Janet Jackson does at the moment. And this is coming from a diehard Janet Jackson fan who both owns and enjoys purchased copies of Damita Jo AND 20 Y.O.

  • Ever since "Emancipation of Mimi" I think MC has started to get the joke that is her persona, and ever since that album I've started to like her. This shamelessly ridiculous video just adds to that.

  • @Tauwan: What disappointed me most about Damita Jo was the piss-poor marketing of that record. Whomever at EMI decided that clunkers like "Just a Little While" or "I Want You" had even remote chances of radio play were hopefully beheaded and thrown to the dogs. By the time "All Night" came around, the window had passed...

J needed a slam dunk after Nipplegate, and releasing "All Night", then "My Baby", then "SLOLOVE" would have proven infinitely more successful.

20 Y.O., however, was nothing short of inexcusable. Sorry.

  • Does the phrase "upgrade my wireless" now have sexual connotations?

  • OK, I was gonna let this video slide by without a word, but the end just annoyed me. Why? Because one cannot upgrade to 802.11n without first opening the computer, taking out some tools, unscrewing the old wifi card, then putting a new (802.11n) card in its place. C'mon, people! It's common sense!

Now back to my "Firefly" marathon.
