Just A Reminder

Despite my best efforts to make 2008 200great, the truth can’t be denied: We are living in a year that has not known a No. 1 song that isn’t Flo Rida’s “Low.” When will the madness end? Please don’t say “when his new single, ‘Elevator,’ swoops in to take the top spot,” even if it did jump from No. 100 to No. 28 this week. My heart can’t take it. [Billboard]

    Do you suppose Mr. Rida gets angry when people pronounce his name “florida”???

    I really can’t take that wax-figure stock photo anymore, either. Yeah, yeah, the music business isn’t so great, but shouldn’t having the #1 single for THIS long mean that Rida has enough dough to get a new publicity shot?

    There are dozens of songs out now that are abysmal that I just can’t help but shake my bottom to on a drunken Saturday night with nary a guilty sentiment floating through my veins.

    This certainly ain’t one of ‘em.

    Nice beard, Blade:Trinity. Are those iron filings?

    I can’t get over his name making him sound like some sort of Menstrual Mascot.

    Yet, when Flo’s album “drops” in Mid March (I know, I know, I can’t wait either!!) after the promotion of these 2 singles, I bet it doesn’t move more than 200,000 in total

    @Nicolars: FTW, easily

    @HONEYBFLY: Word.

    Re: Maura’s original post — iTunes holds the key to the next No. 1 single, because airplay has been so stagnant so far this year.

    Basically, if you’re looking for a savior at this point, it’s probably going to be Mariah. I rarely root for her, and “Touch My Body” is B-minus material from her at best, but I’m so sick of Mr. Rida too that I’m half-rooting for her to put us out of our misery.

    The key question is when the track will drop at iTunes. No word yet from IDJ, but the minute it drops, game over for Flo Rida.

    I think Usher’s “Love in This Club” could have a chance of jumping to #1 on the Hot 100 next week: airplay’s on the rise, it’s currently #1 on iTunes, and if he manages to sell 250-275k copies of the digital single (quite usual for first week sales) he could dethrone Flo Rida by a hair.

    @Aleb: Holy shit — you’re right! Didn’t see that the Usher single had dropped at iTunes. And it’s already Top 20 in airplay. You’re right, that could be enough to topple “Low” — but not till next week’s chart.

    Also interesting: Sara Bareilles’s “Love Song” is now outselling “Low” at iTunes, too. And it’s got heavier airplay than Usher by a mile. I still think you’re right about Usher — sales on that have got to be fat — but next week might finally be interesting.

    @Chris Molanphy: Meh. I’ll take “Low” over “Love Song” any day. Srsly.

    @Aleb: Thank you for giving me the heads-up for this week’s laundromat tune. Two weeks ago, I heard “Low” five times in two hours on two (possibly three?) different stations. I need to make up a little dance for “Love in the Club” that involves folding socks, obvs.
