I think this is an awesome refinement of the distribution model that has been so debated since the In Rainbows release. I think we may have a winner on the established band front. One of the main criticisms I've seen of this method is that it isn't feasible for smaller bands (arguably evidenced by the Saul Williams release. depends on you ask, I guess).
I found an interesting article about a band (The Red Paintings) who are facing this issue while recording their debut album. Their completely different approach to label-free funding may be paving the road for lesser-known acts to pull this off in their own way. Basically, a fan donation funded album. Damn! This is looking to be a very well orchestrated release, outside of the underestimated response to the NIN web servers. Not only is array of media options impressive, Trent personally distributed torrents and the entire release is under a Creative Commons license. To top it off, the free PDF ZIP package includes 40 pages of photography accompanied credits and 33 unique JPGs, many of which show up as individual track cover art in iTunes. Damn!

My fave NIN album is the extra Still disc that came with the deluxe live album, the fact that this sounds a bit similar is places is awesome.

personally, as an amateur DJ and remixer I think the best thing about Trent’s recent online efforts is the inclusion of multi track loops and vocals. I wish more bands would do this sort of thing.

This sounds pretty good so far. The site is running quickly — I stuck with the $10 2xCD version, which is an excellent deal. I can’t remember the last time I paid just $10 for 36 tracks on 2 discs. Go Trent!

I’m really counting on his selling out the Limited Edition, because I just bought one.
OK, so I may live to regret it, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the day will come when an unopened copy will bring more than $300 on Ebay. In the meantime, the 320Kbps MP3 (official bitrate of CliveDobbs) will do me just fine…

Is it just me, or does Trent Reznor look a whole lot like Bernard Butler in that picture?

As for the new record, the price is right, so I might just give it a chance - especially since an instrumental album free of angst-filled lyrics about dystopian societies sounds more appealing to me than recent NIN offerings.

Also, the fact that "An exciting partnership and experience regarding this release will be announced soon" leads me to believe there's more reason behind this being instrumental only....

I agree, the pricing is more than fair, aside from the mere fact of new NIN being very cool. But when I saw I the $300 package, it seemed like overkill. There should be an intermediate set where you can get the vinyl for a more moderate, no sig, price, IMO.

Overall this looks like a decent plan. $5 isn’t too much to ask for 36 tracks and $10 is a good deal for a 2-CD set. Plus, NIN has enough diehards to shell out the extra money for the deluxe versions. I’m not too sure about the $300 package though. Waaaaaay too much if you ask me. The only thing that puzzles me is why this is an instrumental album. This seems like a test run more than anything else to see how it works and then who knows after that.
