0302healy470.jpgCanadian blues guitarist Jeff Healey, best known south of the border for his 1989 hit “Angel Eyes,” died yesterday after a lifelong battle with retinal cancer that rendered him blind when he was a baby and eventually spread to the rest of his body. Healey was 41; his final album and first in eight years, Mess Of Blues, will be released in Canada and the U.S. next month. [National Post]

    Road House forever.

I believe Mess of Blues is his first rock/blues album in eight years - he’s released a number of traditional jazz albums over the last decade.

If you like guitar playing, you should love this clip:

@Ned Raggett: I’ll never forget him accompanying Kathleen Wilhoite (who also played Bennie’s wife on LA Law) on Knock On Wood.

If only he could have ripped taht guy’s throat out instead of Dalton, Road House would have been that much better.

@encyclopediablack: You have a vision, sir.

I muttered about this a bit on my blog but the Dylan cover he does at the end of the movie beats out the original:

@Ned Raggett: Definitely beats out Dylan’s version. It’s too bad that Healey rarely played with sidemen who were even half as talented as he was…

I’m still sort of bothered by the fact that this took until 3:30 p.m. to report…

Maybe I’m just being a hyper-sensitive Canadian about it all?

@jfk1624: Quit whining - there was a L.A. Guns story to get to today.

I’ll have to add to the sentiments posted above. I saw it on the Consumerist Forums. Tragic. Healy was AWESOME! My wife and I saw him live in the Big Easy, about 18 years ago. Wow. Totally unique! My favorite was a Beatles cover he did…

        Enjoy!
