Merge Records’ Welcome Entry Into The Digital-Music Fray

This entire post is probably tainted by my deep, deep bias–and endless love for the Superchunk catalog–but Merge Records has opened a digital store, and has remarkably (for this business) actually given the consumer something they actually want. Besides offering both MP3s and FLAC files, Merge is not only making available their entire discography, but making available rarities for anyone who starts drooling at the prospect of unreleased Lambchop tracks from the Nixon era. (Admittedly, that might just be me.)

First up, the long out-of-print Superchunk disc Clambake Series Volume One, which, if I had a time machine today, I might go back and tell the 2003 version of Dan Gibson not to spend an absurd amount of time trying to track down. Regardless, if this is a sign of what’s to come for my beloved tiny labels of the ’90s (I’m looking at you, Mark Robinson), I’d be thrilled.
