NPR Music has posted an nearly hour-long documentary on all-around music legend Louis Jordan today as part of their Jazz Profiles series, so if you know what’s good for you, head on over and download it. As Matos mentioned months ago, a Louis Jordan record and the liquor of your choice is a recipe for a party, and even the quickest glance at his history on the R&B charts of the 1940’s (including the 113 weeks total his records spent at #1) shows what how massively popular he was during that decade. Also, while the profile downloads, check out the “video” for “Beware”, an all too valid warning about the dangers that lurk in the dating world. [NPR]

Regardless of how you feel about the “swing” revival of the late 90s, it did give renewed interest to a lot of great 40s/50s R&B performers, even if it was just for being covered by lesser artists.
The problem is there’s legions of still neglected artists from this era that are all but impossible to find without buying bootlegs, boxsets and imports (Jamaicans and Europeans seem to give this music its proper due). Tons of one-hit wonders, and some performers with fairly deep catalogs. And if you like Jordon, be sure and check out Wynonie Harris.
That said, Jordon was king for a reason.
Wha??? Oh, Louis JORDAN, the African American 1940’s Jazz sensation… I thought you meant Louis JOURDAN, the bad guy from that cinematic masterpiece SWAMP THING (1982).
Clifford Jordan > Louis Jordan > Jordan Knight
Louis Jordan fuckin’ rules. If you can’t get with that, jack, you’re dead.
