gravyyyy.jpgJamal “Gravy” Woolard, who made headlines in the spring of 2006 when he was shot in the butt outside the Hot 97 building, has been tapped to play the Notorious B.I.G. in Notorious, the Biggie Smalls biopic scheduled to hit theaters in 2009; the movie will also feature Angela Bassett as Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace. According to Nah Right, Gravy has been at the front of the casting line since the Hot 97 incident, so all those open casting calls that even got the New York Times interested may have been nothing more than publicity stunts to drum up excitement about the movie. What about Forest Whitaker? I think he could do it. Idi Amin was probably only a few meals away from becoming Biggie-sized. Plus he’s got the lazy eye going for him too. Hollywood never gets it right.

And the age thing shouldn’t matter. They’re making a Juice Crew movie using a bunch of actors in their 30s and 40s (allegedly Cuba Gooding Jr., Idris Elba, and that dude who played Pinky in Next Friday and Chauncey in Menace II Society)

I wonder how much they’re paying this guy. Probably a lot less than Forest usually requests.

Not really looking forward to Angela playing another pop icon’s mother, especially because she looks nothing like Voletta. Loretta Divine would’ve been my pick.

@rhythmchyc: I feel like Forest might have taken a pay cut for it. At least he would have given some credibility to the role. And you’re right on about Angela Bassett not being the best role. Do you know if it’s true about Jamie Hector (Marlo from The Wire) playing Diddy or is that another silly rumor?

  5. Silverfuture  |   Posted on Mar 6th, 2008

Not only would Forest probably take a pay cut, but he’s lost a ton of weight lately. I just wonder why they don’t just cast Guerilla Black, the Compton Biggie clone.

@Silverfuture: Forgot all about Guerilla Black. He was like one of those post-Steve Perry Journey singers.

I just heard from Miss Info that Derek Luke is playing Diddy (Antwone Fisher; Monica’s videos: “Knock Knock/Get it off” and “So Gone”) and Anthony Mackie’s playing TUPAC (”8 Mile”; “We Are Marshall”)…

    I wonder who’s writing/directing. High-grade supporting cast and a little known lead… “Dreamgirls” anyone?

who made headlines in the spring of 2006 when he was shot in the butt outside the Hot 97 building

Oh, yeah, THAT narrows it down. Who among us hasn’t been shot in the butt there?

  9. PengIn  |   Posted on Mar 6th, 2008

    Theaters? Uh, yeah. Sure.

  10. encyclopediablack  |   Posted on Mar 6th, 2008

Originally, it was Antoine Fuqua. Now George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food and Men Of Honor.) Could be worse. Could be Tyler Perry.

    Oh Tyler Perry.

There’d probably be a wedding at the end if he wrote this.

I checked imdb: One of the writers for “New York Undercover” is co-writing this. Yay!! Loved that show.

@rhythmchyc: I caught rerun of that show the other day and there was a Black Moon song in it which was pretty amazing.

I have to back up a bit. How in the heck is Forest Whitaker going to play the Notorious BIG? Not only does he look nothing like him, he’s 47, Biggy was 24 when he was murdered…
