Izzy Stradlin Keeps Shuffling Along His Own Path

Right now, Axl Rose is somewhere out there, polishing off the 37th rough mix of Chinese Democracy and getting ready to hit "delete" and start all over again. Meanwhile Izzy Stradlin, who left Guns N' Roses in 1991, has since released eight solo albums. 1992's Izzy Stradlin & The JuJu Hounds, was the only one released soon enough to have benefited from the afterglow of his GNR departure in such a way that it made a blip on the pop-culture radar, and his last three albums have been digital-only releases. Still, that first album and its single "Shuffle It All" remain longtime favorites of mine, and if Izzy keeps quietly releasing collections of Stonesy licks directly to iTunes for the rest of his life, I'll consider that a more noble pursuit than if he'd joined up with Velvet Revolver.[YouTube]

  • HOLY CRAP - thank you for posting this. This has long been one of my favorite albums, and songs, of all time. One of the first basslines I ever learned.

  • Great post. Agree completely. Just got done downloading a bunch of his more recent stuff from itunes. I hope he never gets sucked back into the world of Axl.

  • The follow-up to the JuJu Hounds disc, "117°," is a damn-fine record, too.

  • I just finished Slash's book and he says thay Izzy was jamming with Velvet Revolver from the beginning. He left VR the second Scott Weiland arrived in the studio to jam with the guys. Me thinks someone has a fear of lead singers! I really loved this album when it first came out, the cover of "Pressure Drop" is amazing.
@Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee: I think a lot of the Guns guys played on different tracks on that album too! I'm sure that Duff played bass on some tracks and Matt Sorum may have hit the skins a couple times.

  • headband + gloves = always a great look for a drummer (see also: the now-departed Michael Dahlquist of Silkworm).

  • @ColdBloodedBMC: If the band I was jamming with brought in a notorious junkie and fuck-up as lead singer I'd be out of there faster than you could say Big Bang Baby, baby.

  • @ColdBloodedBMC: I actually believe Duff played bass on EVERY track, barring one or two at most... I know for certain that Taz Bentley (ex Reverend Horton Heat) played drums on every track.

Rick Richards (ex Georgia Satellites) did some great guitar playing on the disc, too.

Izzy's stuff is fanatstic, for the most part. I'll definitely be listening to this stuff tonight.
