    Whoa, “growing up in L.A.”? Didn’t Steve and Scott grow up in Stockton, and wouldn’t that put them closer to the Bay Area’s A’s or Giants? Well, Malkmus lived in L.A. through age 10, which is the time when initial and enduring sports team loyalties are forged.

    A clue I now understand in retrospect about the degree of SM’s basketball fandom: on a stop at D.C.’s Black Cat on a “Face the Truth” tour, he dedicated “Gilbert C’mon” to Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas. Some folks thought from the very start that Pavement was destined for arenas . . . for arenas . . . wow, tough crowd, I’m going over like Brighten the Corners.
