Given that she’s attempting a return to normalcy, it makes a kind of cosmic sense that Britney Spears is guest-starring on How I Met Your Mother. Back in the glory years of the sitcom, nothing was more normal than a past-their-prime popstar dropping lame zingers in front of a live studio audience. How I Met Your Mother is a fairly traditional sitcom, but like Britney, it does new things with an old form, making this seem like a good match. On the other hand, putting Neil Patrick Harris and Britney Spears in the same room may cause some sort of irony supernova to form. [Yahoo! News]

HIMYM is my favorite show on television. For me, this is bad news. Britney apparently has signed on to deliver a few lines in a very minor role, but her guest stint has led Alicia Silverstone to pull out of a much larger and more important role that is part of a multi-ep story arc. The fansites have speculated that Alicia was to be set up as “the Mother”, and that would have been a great step in a “comeback” effort for Alicia, as well as quite a memorable casting coup for the little sitcom that could.
I’m so bummed.
@Rob Murphy: Yeh, but Elliot from Scrubs is now replacing Alicia Silverstone. Win!
How fun if Wilmer Valderama joined the cast of the show, they could rename it How I Met Yo’ Mama
