Boston Tour To Feature Stryper Vocalist And Some Noob From MySpace

decarlo.jpgLooks like one singer won’t be enough for the upcoming Boston tour, their first since the death of original vocalist Brad Delp. We’ve already told you that ex-Stryper Michael Sweet would be on board, but Tom Scholz (who is Boston, for all intents and purposes), will also bring along Tommy DeCarlo, a fortysomething Home Depot credit manager and father of two. DeCarlo posted a tribute to Delp, ” A Man He’ll Always Be,” on his MySpace page, along with several Boston covers. And Scholz heard.

Hearing of a tribute being planned, a friend encouraged DeCarlo to take action. He remembers, “I sent my myspace page link to the BOSTON camp, and I also offered to sing my song at the tribute show, never thinking I’d get a reply. I did end up getting one about two weeks later thanking me for the offer, but at this point there were not going to be any additions to the line up. It was a very nice reply, and I was just thrilled that I got a response.”

Several weeks later, Tom Scholz happened to hear Tommy’s cover of “Don’t Look Back,” and was shocked. Knowing every nuance of Brad’s voice, he could not believe that this was not Brad singing, exclaiming, “I haven’t heard anyone else sing like that in 35 years.” Scholz contacted Tommy and invited him to come and sing a few songs at the tribute. DeCarlo’s reaction was, “I would have never believed this could happen in a million years. The next thing I knew I was on my way to Boston to sing with BOSTON…are you kidding me?”

Awww! This is so much sweeter than the Judas Priest thing. Plus his song about Delp is only two minutes long, which shows impressive restraint for a Boston fan.

Here he is at the tribute concert last August.

Are you feeling this? Are you more than a feeling this?

awwww, this reminds me of when richard oakes replaced bernard butler in suede. except the suede story never had any home depot connection. to my knowledge.

I’d think the Stryper vocalist HAS to be gone. Tommy’s a dead ringer for Delp, vocally.

the Stryper guy is actually a dead ringer for Dennis DeYoung of Styx, so this is way off. I don’t get it, but maybe he could pull it off.

I am by no means a huge fan of Boston, but did attend the tribute show last year, and was amazed at both Sweet and DeCarlo. This really is a case of there being two great choices and not being able to choose just one.

Plus, you get that all important 80s Christian metal fan demographic built-in by having the Stryper guy attached.
