Thought Leonard Cohen, Madonna, and the Coug were a bit B-list for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame? At least last month’s ceremony didn’t feature Tom “Life Is A Highway” Cochrane inducting arena demigods Triumph. That happened at the Juno Awards last night. Oh, Canada! Are we already praising those inspired by Rush up there?
“Somebody’s Out There,” at No. 27 their biggest single in America. The song can be found of 1986’s The Sport Of Kings (which is presumably hockey). If Geddy Lee’s sung a song as catchy and spirited, I’m OK with never hearing it.
“Magic Power,” as performed at the 1983 US Festival. Starts off like Journey (who America has somehow not gotten around to inducting into its Hall Of Fame), but the double guitars get kinda fierce after the first minute, and then it kind of sounds like Rush.
And here’s their first Canadian hit single, a cover of Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way.” It kind of sounds like Rush.
As members of the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame, the band joins an exclusive circle of celebrated artists that includes Guy Lombardo, Anne Murray, Ian & Sylvia, Bryan Adams and the Tragically Hip. It is now rumored that the classic line-up may reunite following this belated recognition of their impressive body of work.
Canada!

Madonna, LC, and the Coug b-list?
I like Triumph and Cochrane, so stuff it buddy!
At this rate, Avril and whats-his-face may have a decent shot at solidifying their musically historic greatness for all of Canadialand to see….
@Lucas Jensen: At least in an “All-Star Jam” context.
Has Mashmakhan been inducted yet?
I get the feeling you’re mocking us…
The song can be found of 1986’s The Sport Of Kings (which is presumably hockey).
Laughed uncontrollably at that one.
@brasstax: I like Triumph and Cochrane, so stuff it buddy!
I’m not your buddih, friend!
I’m not your friend, guy!
Make fun of Ian & Sylvia all you want, but “Four Strong Winds” is easily one of the finest songs to come out of both Canada and the 1960s.
Come on, people, you’re getting lazy. There’s comedy gold to be mined here: Max Webster. April Wine. Prism. Toronto. Headpins. Chilliwack, for god’s sake!
CHILLIWACK!!!
@almostred: None of those are in our Canadian Music Hall of Fame, but you could always make fun of the fact five of the last twelve inductees have been producers (David Foster, Bruce Fairbarn, Daniel Lanois, Bob Ezrin, Bob Rock) and what that says about Canadian music in the 1980s.
Then again, if the alternative is inducting Triumph…
“The Sport of Kings” could be curling, FYI.
@Thierry: I just bought a bunch of Ian and Sylvia records last month because of how totally hot they are on the covers.
@Chris Molanphy: Ha, South Park was exactly what I was thinking of when I wrote that.
I am Canadian and I’ve never even heard a Triumph song!
Yes you have — layyyyy it oh-onnnn the liiiiiiiinneeee!
Sorry! You’re right, I have heard them. I guess I didn’t hear it as the sound of my Poppy Family records probably kept drowning it out!
