Stone Temple Pilots Perform In LA, Plan Album, And Why Not

AP080407032087.jpgThe reunited Stone Temple Pilots performed for the first time since 2002 at the Harry Houdini Estate in LA on Monday night. The brief set consisted of three singles from Purple, three from Tiny Music…From The Vatican Gift Shop and Core’s “Plush.” I guess they’re saving those deep album cuts from Shangri-La Dee Da for the big tents. Video peppered with off-camera snark after the jump.

Guitarist Dean DeLeo, seen “making love to his guitar” above, says the band is planning a new album. Do you realize that Stone Temple Pilots entire career, from breakthrough to breakup to reunion, has all happened since Guns’n'Roses released its last album of original material? Come on, Axl.

Eleven Hundred Springs and Exit 380
Prior to that, Exit 380 were content conjuring up moody rock songs that would have fit well on albums by Stone Temple Pilots or Alice in Chains. What's still surprising is how well singer Dustin Blocker's pipes sound so perfectly placed within ...

All those butt rock enthusiasts in the Mistake by the Lake must be pissed they got gypped out of their opportunity to witness history…

That being said…can’t wait to see em on May 31 at PNC.

The fact that they’re privileging material from Tiny Music over the much more popular Core makes me feel a little optimistic that the new album will be halfway worthwhile.

So Scott “get you kicked out” shenanigans with Velvet Revolver was a planned thing all along?

Planning an 85-date tour with this band is the height of optimism.

There’s an old NME review about a Pilots album (I think it was “No. 4″) where it simply reads:

“In certain Muslim countries, they cut the hands off of guitarists that over-indulge in masturbatory solos.

    1/10″

    ———

    Spot on, I’d say.

I just scrolled through the video. it baffles me how anyone can tell the difference between this group’s songs. I sure can’t. it’s one big melody-less, hook-less drone. Boring.

I used to LOVE STP. My love affair with them ended with the simultaneous release of their shitty last album and seeing them perform EXACTLY THE SAME SET with the same banter twice in the span of a year. Very disheartening to my young self.

I am frickin’ ELATED that they’re back together and touring. I’ve only gotten to see them once back in 2K1, and I hope I can catch them again this time around. Hopefully, they plan another MA date so I don’t have to go to that ridiculous River Rave and sit through bands I could care less about. Fingers crossed.
