A bunch of blogs are trying to give away copies of the soundtrack to the indie film Smart People starring Juno's Ellen Page, Sideways' Thomas Haden Church, Sex And The City's Sarah Jessica Parker and Enemymine's Dennis Quaid. Sounds like a quirky sleeper, but what's that on the soundtrack? Why, Nuno Bettencourt! Lots and lots of Nuno Bettencourt!
Bettencourt wrote the strummy acoustic original music to the upcoming Miramax comedy/Sundance hit, "Smart People" (which stars Ellen Page, Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church as a random group of friends and family that come to the aid of Dennis Quaid - a recently widowed professor dealing with the after-effects of a concussion).
The digital-only soundtrack release comes out April 11 via Miramax/Hollywood records and features, Bettencourt's original tunes (with vocals too), newly-reformed '90s Australian hard-rock band Baby Animals (fronted by his wife Suze DeMarchi), and former Extreme bassist Paul Mangone.
A reunited Baby Animals! And we all Nuno know can bring the strummy acoustic goodness.
Woo!

The Not-Cherone? No thanks...
This song was one of my favorite songs of 10th grade, but the religious undertones in the lyrics should be pointed out to those of us who were like me and who didn't get the references.
don't you mean "Wings' thomas haden church?"
Enemyyour's
Nuno's not 'Smart People'! Get the Funk out?!?
@Maura Johnston: I knew how to play "More Than Words" when I was in 10th grade (save for that finger-tapping nonsense at the end), but I didn't realize until at least two years later, well after the song was out of vogue, that it could have gotten me so much ass. Sigh.
That song rivals Live's "Lightning Crashes" and Green Day's "Time of Your Life" as one of the most wildly misinterpreted ballads ever.
HE WANTS SEX! It's not romantic AT ALL!
This film has been redeemed in my eyes. Seriously. Yay, Nuno!
I'm sure it might still be cringe-worthy and discomfort-making, but dude. BABY ANIMALS.
@Maura Johnston: Wait, huh? Religious overtones in "Hole Hearted" -- oh dear, I seemed to have missed that boat entirely.
@tigerpop: Where were you when I was in 10th grade? Oh well.
@the rich girls are weeping: Upstate New York, unfortunately. I can still play it though. Private concerts available.
@the rich girls are weeping: I didn't know either until a friend who knows a lot about lyrical religious signifiers pointed them out to me. That Gary Cherone is sneaky!
@tigerpop: don't tempt me, baby. (;
@Maura Johnston: I need to examine this issue more closely! But now that I think about it, it does fit the tropes of lyrics of that nature!
Nuno's yet another hotshot guitarist who forgot his roots. We miss him. Why he'd want to go back to playing Simple Riffs 101 is beyond me.
I always got a kick out of playing "Hole Hearted" for visitors to my house. I enjoyed the irony of standing next to my Miskatonic University Thaummaturgical Doctorate hanging on the wall, and playing a blatantly pro-God song. Plus, "Hole Hearted" is an excellent show-off song, that sounds harder to play than it really is!
