During yesterday’s Red Sox home opener, the visage of Neil Diamond appeared on the Fenway Park Jumobtron–not just to lead the traditional eighth-inning singalong of “Sweet Caroline,” but to let Red Sox Nation know that he’d be playing a show on Fenway Park’s field later this summer. Perhaps sensing that diehard fans of both the Sox and Diamond would have to face a huge choice between watching their favorite team gut out August’s dog days and experiencing the greatest communal “ba, ba, baaaaaa” ever, the powers that be at Fenway scheduled the show for Aug. 23, a Saturday when the Red Sox are playing in the afternoon. This concert is going to be huge. I was at the game yesterday and when his face was shown, the place went nuts. People will be camping out for this.
YUCK. “Sweet Caroline” is a complete travesty, even in Fenway. If Henry/Werner/Lucchino are so devoted to the history of the franchise, they should pony up for an animatronic John Kiley planted over the triangle.

[sorry for the double post...]
Confused: did they play Rick Astley or the dreaded Neil at this game?
@Chris Molanphy:
If instead of Neil Diamond, it was actually a Rick Astley concert?? That would be a mighty Rickrolling indeed.
@af607105: Forget Neil Diamond, I’d camp out for Rick Astley. “It Would Take A Strong Strong Man” is my anthem!
@Chris Molanphy: They played Rick Astley at yesterday’s Mets game. Neil is played in (I think) the 8th at every Red Sox game.
@af607105: Oh! Sorry — had to reread the item to clarify that this was an ad for Diamond at a ballgame, not the regular playing of the song. As you were…
