The LA Weekly has let classical critic Alan Rich go because of decisions made "by the corporate people in Phoenix," where Weekly owner Village Voice Media is headquartered. Just out of curiosity, how many full-time classical critics does VVM have left at this point? (For a point of comparison, Rich's ouster means that the entire city of Los Angeles has one.) • Not to be cruel, but is there much demand for classical music coverage?

  • Now he can make more as a composer. Best of luck, Alan.

  • @Chris N.: You're a music writer, right? I think if you extend that question to music coverage on the whole you'll fall down a very slippery slope.

  • I actually think there's more demand for classical coverage than publishers think. I also think publishers will be in trouble when they find in 10 years that kids (ie pop fans) don't read papers or go to their crappy websites for music news/content. But even then, they prolly still won't realize that maybe, just maybe, they should have kept some of their smarter content, because the only ones who read papers anymore are those over 40.
