Dr. Luke May Have An Advanced Degree In Plagiarism

Last year, “Since U Been Gone” writer and pop song technician Dr. Luke got in a bit of hot water for interpolating a bit of the Rubinoos’ “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend into Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend” without letting the powerpop band know. Now the Arizona rock outfit The Asphalt is alleging that Luke took the hook of their song “Tonight” and reappropriated it for Daughtry’s “Feels Like Tonight,” and hearing the choruses back-to-back makes one think that either they’re 100% right, or Dr. Luke is so locked into hitmaker mode these days that he can only write punched-up versions of already-existing songs’ choruses. So, there was supposed to be a hook in there? Huh.

Too bad they can’t get along like the country stars of old – they just re-recorded everybody’s stuff incessantly and no one cared. Oh, wait – the difference is those songs were actually good and not soulless.

I’m guessing that Mats shirt was a hand me down.

Let’s not forget that “Since U Been Gone” owes a little something to “Maps” as Ted Leo so eloquently revealed…

@Chris Molanphy: I’ll diss “Since U Been Gone” — this may be the minority opinion, but to a lot of people there’s a difference between “really catchy”, “easy on the ears”, etc. and “good”

Well, both songs suck hard. At least they have that in common.

@Captain Wrong: Which two songs? If you’re dissing “Since U Been Gone,” you might want to arm yourself for the Idolator onslaught now. (If you were referring to the Daughtry tune, carry on…)

As for the good Dr., I loves me some Luke, but he’s running out of hooks. Pink’s “Who Knew” last year (originally ‘06) was basically the same thing, too.

  8. They’re similar but not THAT similar.

@dog door: I concur, Kelly Clarkson has been vastly overrated by an audience of hip music enthusiasts who want to be able to say they like “pop music.”
