Lisa Stansfield’s Birthday: A Fine Excuse To Post One Of The Greatest Songs Ever

And don’t even tell me that “All Around The World” isn’t worthy of that title, readers. It’s got joy and pain and a falsetto break! So what is the now-42-year-old singer doing these days? Her official site hasn’t been updated since last July (not even a birthday wish!), but that’s recent enough to tip us off to her role in the Dylan Thomas biopic The Edge Of Love, which also stars Matthew Rhys, Keira Knightley, and Sienna Miller and which opens in the UK in June. From the looks of stills from the set, Lisa’s character shares her nicely curled hair. (Oh, how I wanted a spit-curl like hers back in the day; I had to settle for a mop of frizz.) You can’t buy Affection on iTunes unless you’re British, and this hurts me inside.

Ah, that video really takes me back. I recall thinking that her hairdo didn’t fit her voice when I finally saw the video. Now it seems perfectly fitting…both smooth like butter!

Oh Christ, I worship this woman. Like Alison Moyet, she’s got the black girl voice, but with a little more grooviness. Come back to us, Lisa! We need you!

I don’t get why this song ended up on one of VH1’s “worst” lists. Maybe that lame comic “THE Greg Wilson” had a vendetta against it.

On the Barry White box set it’s a duet with the two of them, which is so fucking perfect it hurts. Later, she flat out covered Barry. And it’s her second album that really rocks.
