Trent Reznor Leaves A Package On Radio Programmers’ Doorsteps

ARTIST: Nine Inch Nails
TITLE: “Discipline”
DEBUT: April 22, 2008

ONE-LISTEN VERDICT: “Discipline” is a completely fine Nine Inch Nails track that operates mostly in the same vein of Year Zero’s singles, and it’ll probably make at least the top 10 of the Modern Rock chart within the first week of its release thanks to the “wtf” factor surrounding its just dropping out of nowhere today. And its release was accompanied by a blog post that just said “2 weeks,” which is fueling speculation that Reznor’s going to release a full album of new, not-just-instrumental tracks within two weeks. (Hey, today is Tuesday.) So is this guy going to just put out a new album every two months or so now that he’s free of label constraints?

WHERE TO FIND IT: Reznor’s giving it away as a free download on his official site in a few hours, but for now you can find it right here!

    OK, seriously… WTF?

It took him like 5 years to make Downward Spiral, The Fragile and With Teeth. And now he’s releasing material every six months or so? I guess drugs really are bad, mmmmkay.

Trent Reznor, continuing in the tradition of the funky white boys who came before him.

The falsetto on the bridge, though… I actually LOLed when I heard that.

OK, I already like this more than any of the singles off of Year Zero or With Teeth.

Ya know, it’s be fine to release sporadic songs, EPs, etc., if EVERY ONE OF YOUR SONGS DIDN’T SOUND EXACTLY THE SAME!!

I wish this was a Janet Jackson cover.

did anyone else think of “discipline daddy” ala A.D. after they heard the song? Not saying i didn’t enjoy the track or anything.

Yeah, probably being all Captain Obvious here, but it does have a ‘Go to http://www.nin.com May 5′ in the comments of the ID3 tag.

I must say, just thinking in terms of the commerce aspect: If he actually planned this before he started the self-release thing — i.e., start with a hardcore fan release of instrumental shit to get people excited for any material from him (and thereby sell more copies of said shit than one would normally), then drop the radio-friendly material — he’s smarter than I gave him credit. Srsly, in terms of fan and radio expectations-setting, this outdoes Radiohead.

@Chris Molanphy: Very agreed. Combined with the self-release/net-release savvy, dude has it *made.*

@Ned Raggett: I can safely say that’s the only time I expect Trent Reznor’s name to appear next to Muslimgauze.

While I’d love if I got another album in the vein of ‘A Warm Place’, etc…

    I like this song.

$5 per full download of high quality tracks of the entire album each time = dude can turn into Muslimgauze if he’d like!

Granted my headphones I’m currently using suck… but this track is kinda soft.

    Was hoping for louder noise.
