The video for R. Kelly’s “Hairbraider” is out, and now we can watch women writhe while he slowly reveals the garish gold braids that have already been visible in recent photos. There was some vocoderism on Double Up, but he’s fallen so hard for the likes of T-Pain and The-Dream that this feels mostly like a genre exercise. Even though I enjoy all three artists, I hope this vocal effect will sound dated sooner rather than later. Autotune or not, this isn’t even the best song he’s made about hair braiding.

“In the hip hop world, the people are represented by two separate, yet equally important groups. The scandalous hair-braiders who embezzle from their employers, and the rappers who rape them in retaliation. These are their stories.”
