Coachella: The Race To Avoid A Paralyzing Sunburn Begins Now

mainPoster.jpgToday marks the first day of the three-day desert sweatfest Coachella, and I would be shirking my blogging duties if I didn’t tell you in advance that have made my way out to southern California for blog-information-gathering purposes (well, that and the chance to see Portishead open for Prince, because when is that going to happen ever again in my life). If you’ll be there, or if you see someone on the schedule who I absolutely positively should not miss, let me know in comments! (Unless your can’t-miss band is Slightly Stoopid, because … no.) Also please speak up if you know where to buy a big floppy hat around here, because I am terrified that I’m going to get burnt to a crisp. [Coachella]

I’ll just be sitting here in PA, silently cursing you and all other attendees.

    I am obsenely jealous.

the only thing i can suggest is to stay far away from the Gobi tent. the stench of dan deacon fans at 100+ degrees should remain the entire weekend.

Flogging Molly live is a good time.

Addendum: The chance to see Kraftwerk opening for Portishead, who themselves are opening for Prince.

@stephenbush: You are correct, sir. My initial phrasing was in error.

dredg is solid live. I hear they’re playing a lot of material from a future album, though, so I don’t know what it sounds like. Anything but MIA sounds fine to me.

@TheRunningboard7: In an attempt to delve into the mind of the kind of person who insults MIA pretty much out of nowhere, I went to YouTube and looked for an example of this “dredg” band that are apparently “solid live”. I had no idea there was a guyliner/D&D crossover demographic.

And maybe I missed it, but it looks like nobody’s addressed the real travesty of this poster: Jack Johnson’s name is larger than Kraftwerk’s. Yeah, I needed to get mad about something comparatively superficial today, thanks.

    I am dying here.

Modeselektor! So jealous, I was there last year but the lineup just couldn’t cut it this year for me.

Sean Penn?? See Sean Penn. If only so you can say “I saw Sean Penn at Coachella.”

If I were there, I’d fight to see MIA, Goldfrapp, Yelle, Santogold, Midnight Juggernauts, Boys Noize, the Verve, and Portishead. I’d also try to see Calvin Harris, Hot Chip, Kate Nash, Hotpants Rilo Kiley, and the Teenagers, but I’d avoid Uffie and Sia like the plague.

Oh, and Sam Sparro will be guesting at Mark Ronson’s set- he’ll be singing “Black & Gold” and “Stop Me” with Mark’s band. I wouldn’t miss that for the world.

I’m a freak, because I thought this line-up was a joke… too good to be real.
Yeah, and Jack Johnson = pushed down a flight of stairs.

I’d love to see Black Kids get a live review on your site, a good 6 months after the infamous Idolator special report regarding stopping the Black Kids hype. Let’s hear how they truly are as a band now that the initial fuss has cleared. They play today (Friday) at 3:25 pm on the Mojave stage.

As much as I’ve loved Dan Deacon every time I’ve seen him, I just can’t imagine how the “playing in the crowd” gimmick will go over in a crowd that huge. I bet the Dwight Yoakam set will be fascinating, though, because he seems like the type of cat that will really enjoy playing up to his outlaw status in Nashville.

target off highway 111 in palm desert is prolly your best bet for a “floppy hat”

i second the dredg motion. d&d and guyliner aside (which i didn’t think i’d ever seen them in eyeliner, but i digress) they are really great live for the first 15 minutes and then it gets repetitive. but again, it is a really great 15 minutes. ok 10. which can be 1.5 songs but….’catch without arms’ is haunting like that.

    Jens Lekman.

@catdirt: the target in Palm Springs also has a staggering selection of trial-sized toiletries and, if last year is any indication, this includes tiny bottles of anti-bacterial hand sanitizer and those little packets of toilet seat covers-total necessities for being relegated to port-a-potties (or overused “VIP” toilets) for 3 days.

Have fun! I had a blast in 05!

  20. by Maura Johnston at 3:05 am

@villagegreen: i saw a few songs of their set, and it was like … they were going for a cure feel, but wound up coming off like a super-sloppy hot hot heat tribute band. mid-period hot hot heat, at that.
