Mariah Carey’s rough performance on GMA this morning started with an awkward stair-descent and only got worse from there; apparently chastised by accusations that her previous television appearances have been augmented by backing tapes, she attempted to prove to the world that she didn’t need any pre-recorded help this morning, and the results, to put it mildly, almost had me wishing that someone would wheel out an ice cream truck just to give her something else to do. Intentional or not, the constant cutting between Mariah singing “Touch My Body” onstage and the pre-teen boys in the front row was the funniest comedy moment on ABC in eons.
Nah, MC pulled this off quite well…it looked like we were having an Ashlee Simpson moment right there at the beginning….
All I know is that it will take WEEKS for all the blood to dry from the heads that will roll following this performance….
Nice save. I’m not a huge fan of Mariah and I think her voice is going down the tubes, to put it nicely, but “Touch My Body” is multitracked and layered in such an extreme way that I’m surprised she even tries to sing it live. If I were her I’d just mime the whole thing with a big smile on my face.

Honey, they’re just trying to cover up the fact that your voice has clearly seen better days (even if I never much cared for the vocal wankery she pulled in the first place). I must admit though, she worked that little remark into the song quite well…
I concur with most of the comments here. I wouldn’t call that a “disaster”. I think it’s hilarious that she snipped at her backing vocalists by ad-libbing new lyrics to the song, but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have noticed it if I hadn’t been tipped off to it ahead of time.
I’m less bothered by the “performance” than I am by the fact that she would perform a song called “Touch My Body” on GMA at 8:30 AM EST. And wearing that stripper-licious dress-and-heels-and-hair outfit. She could easily have done this — or any — song wearing the more subdued style she wore for Idol Gives Back.
Don’t get me wrong — I continue to be amazed at how well Mariah has…aged…but that just seemed wrong (?), inappropriate (?), help-me-out-here (?), for a morning show. Or maybe I’m just getting old and cranky.
