The Doors are one of the top Rock Acts of all time. They are timeless. They were a huge inspiration for Iggy Pop, Joy Division, Siouxsie, Echo and the Bunnymen, Marilyn Manson etc etc.
You claim they’re crap, but if they are crap how come 40 years after they ended, they’re still going strong in sales, influence, and even being discussed in this blog where everybody claim to hate them.
That’s the perfect example,how they were really important and inflential. If they were meaningless nobody would be discussing them now.

I love the doors. Call me a stoner, call me an idiot, call me a depresed teenager, because quite frankly I might very be all three (well, no the stoner one).

To some people, Jim Morrison’s poetry is the rhyming of random words while he was high…perhaps it is. But, it is really deep, and it hits me somewhere inside.

I enjoy the sound of the music. It is different. It is good. It makes me mellow. And it is fascinating to listen to.
Unlike so much other music it gains my interest, sucks me in…second by second I’m being pulled into another world and taken away from this life.
That’s what good music should do.

And if you don’t like Jim Morrison, think he’s nothing, read some of his quotes. They are very true, and very beautiful. And I appreciate the art he has given this world…
so yah.

No bass player. This is what annoys me the most about
the Doors. Yet, in studio recordings, they hired one. What
kind of band who really cares about their live performances
would refuse to have a Bassist in their band ? It makes no
sense. Robbie and Ray were average musicians, there is
no escaping that. The band’s popularity was embellished
by the physical attractiveness of Jim Morrison, and his
counter-culture bad-boy image, with faux-psychadelic imagery.
Musically speaking there is little to admire. There were literally
thousands of people playing the same styles of music just as
well, and many of them better than the Doors.
Without Morrison, none of them would have been remembered
today. Love him or hate him, Morrison was the draw, and personally,
I hate him. From every report, he was a total pompous ass.

Of all creative bands in the history of rock music, the Doors may have been the most creative. Their first album contains only masterpieces and remains virtually unmatched. Jim Morrison may well be the single most important rock frontman. He is the one who defined the rock vocalist as an artist, not just a singer. Ray Manzaker’s style at the keyboards was at the vanguard of the fusion of classical, jazz, soul and rock music. The virulence of some of their riffs bridged the blues-rock era and the hard-rock era. Whether it was him, Krieger or Manzarek or all of them, their songs have a unique quality that has never been repeated. They are metaphysical while being psychological and while being physical (eroticand violent). They are the closest thing rock music has produced to William Shakespeare.

i hate the doors. i hate jim morrisons voice. i hate the lyrics that attempt so fruitlessly to be epic, thought provoking and visionary, but fall so very short. they are just one of the most overrated bands of the era, and there is not a lot of classic rock i dislike. but the doors, i just despise.

I hate the doors too, never even got any proof as to what the hype was all about. I am a guitarist / bassist who listens to classical, jazz, funk, world music to heavy metal, death.
Likes virtuoso musicians as well as normal folks (read kenny rogers, alabama etc..).. but i can’t stand any stuff that doesn’t move you by sheer musical virtuosity or emotions .. and that is what doors is all about. the drugs might be the reason but we dont have to listen to the crap and worse to hear idiots all over the world praising them

To the author of this article; “hacky” isn’t a word. I think the word you were looking for is “hackneyed.”

The Doors were pretty lame. I imagine a lot of people grew up on them because of their parents, but in all honesty, I found Morrison to be a bit of a trite, boilerplate, hippy. His lyrics were that of a 9th grade flower-child with an overzealous fascination with doing LSD.

I’m sure bitches loved him, though, and he undeniably made an impact on pop-culture and record sales. He had an Oliver Stone movie written about him for crying out loud. 99% of all musicians can’t say that.

Still, in my worthless opinion, their music was rather lame.

I started writing lyrics in 1968 when I was 9 years old……Jim Morrison is the absolute worst lyric writer of anyone who “made it”….It’s CRAP!!!! I wrote better crap when I was 9 and I’m not being egotistical….It just is what it is….He’s The worst lyric writer EVER….On the other hand, the band members (THE DOORS) were pretty great. Losing Morrison should have been the best thing that ever happened to them.
