Music is being accessed by listeners on the internet at a growing rate but for some reason, very few are fighting to get the same public performance rights that they have through every other medium (radio, TV, concert venues, etc..). To me its simple, if AOL and Yahoo are making revenue via subscriptions and advertising for playing music, they should pay back a comparable percentage to the writers of the music they play. I also believe this argument should be brought to Youtube and Myspace when you factor in how imperitive music is to their success.
