Metallica To Headline KROQ’s Weenie Roast, Not Suck?

AP070712023921.jpg Metallica is headlining KROQ’s Weenie Roast on May 17, where they’ll be joined by Cali-punk pals The Offspring, Bad Religion, Pennywise, and a bunch of bands that don’t remember that Black Flag show in ’82 where things got crazy. Oh wait, Metallica weren’t punk rockers! Forgot! I was already to write about how this was Lars & Co.’s most blatant alt-grab since Lollapalooza ’96 until I discovered that Metallica actually headlined 1999′s Weenie Roast. So I guess I’ll just make fun of the fact that Metallica has only made one album of original material in the last decade, and man did it suck. Full line-up after the jump.

Metallica
The Offspring
Raconteurs
Rise Against
Bad Religion
Pennywise
The Bravery
Scars On Broadway
Seether
Flogging Molly
Atreyu
MGMT
Flobots
Ludo

Pennywise actually played the 1999 show along with Metallica too. Orgy, Smashmouth, Sugar Ray, Eve 6 and Limp Bizkit were probably not invited this time, so feel proud, dudes!

METALLICA To Co-Headline KROQ-FM’s ‘Weenie Roast’ This Month [Blabbermouth]

  1. How do I say this ... THROWDINI!

I always think its strange when I hear Metallica on KROQ. I could be wrong about this, but its my recollection that they never played Metallica songs, until one year they did one of the “All-time Favorite KROQ Artist” weekends and Metallica fans voted them like 12th over all. This was some time in the mid- to late-90s and the last metal station KNAC had just gone off the air. Anyway, the line-up above (with a few exceptions) is why I find it almost impossible to listen to the station after the morning show is over. I can stand most of those bands, and I’ve never actually heard them play anything by MGMT.

“Enter Sandman” was the KROQ turning point, IIRC.

Having watched the DVD of Devo’s Lollapalooza ’96 set, I can only assume they kicked Metallica’s ass.

What kind of set will the Flobots play? the “Handlebars” song five times in a row??

  5. NeverEnough

Fuck these bands. It’s Ian McCulloch’s birthday. What about a post celebrating the Wonder and Beauty that is Echo and the Bunnymen?

@How do I say this … THROWDINI!: KROQ has played MGMT’s “Time To Pretend” 173 times

  7. How do I say this ... THROWDINI!

@bleepbloop: Well, like I said, I rarely listen after the morning show anymore, so, there you go. I can only take some much nu-metal, emo-metal, System of a Down-wannbes, etc.

Plus, knowing KROQ, that 173 times was all in one day, effectively killing the enjoyment anyone might have received from thinking, “Hey, I like this song.”

Atreyu? Has KROQ officially moved into the “Active Rock” format?

Hmmm…173 spins in — that means the MGMT song will be going into call-out research very soon — expect to see the song dropped from rotation by the end of the month.

So many people’s dads are psyched for this bullshit, you have no idea.

  11. walkmasterflex

    The Bravery? Really??

  12. tigerpop

@walkmasterflex: You can cry on my shoulder. In-fucking-explicable.

    Ain’t that the truth!

    The Offspring = Pathetic

Kroq is lost to me. They are trying to hard to be the rocker station in town. I hate to admit it but I’ve been punching in to 98.7 more. I’m not fully converted but at least now I have a choice.
