The last time we ran this segment, it went relatively well. (Despite introducing me to the Flobots.) So let’s give it another try. What’s missing from the pages of this blog and the 17,000 others currently populating the Internet while we’ve been hung up on that Frightened Rabbit record? As long as no one mentions anything “presented” by the Broken Social Scene, we should be fine. Suggestions outside the realm of the indie especially welcome.

Since you’re not qualified to write about music in the first place how about you just suck me sideways.
Oh, I hate the Doors too so this has nothing to do with that.
The criminal lack of Echo and the Bunnymen should be righted this very instant.
And how about a post discussing our favorite BritPoppers of yesterday? And top 5 commenter lists (best/worst concerts, favorite bands, albums etc)
Pebbles Flintstone is a mouthy cunt, just ignore her.
How about some love for 70’s power pop (outside of the obvious Big Star)? I know the Rubinoos were mentioned back when that whole Avril Lavigne thing was going on. What about The Raspberries, Shoes, etc?
Perhaps this is coming to mind because I just referenced Piper and Artful Dodger in a previous comment…
@Pebbles Flintsone: Hmmm. Please elaborate?
Yeah, what’s the deal with that “Broken Social Scene presents…” album title? Seems silly.
Ive been listening to the Les Savy Fav live album.
Oh, and Jubilee…from right here in LA. Those guys are pretty sweet.
@NeverEnough: I agree with the britpop sentiment. More Damon Albarn would be fantastic, Jarvis too… keep Oasis out of it though. More live show news/reviews would also be great. In reality though I’m quite happy with Idolator, just the way it is.
@Kathleen Turner Overdrive:
@moomintroll: I just want a chance to babble about Menswe@r. :)
i’ve been listening to lots of tiny yong, the cambodian singer whose album l’integrale was the last thing posted on drugburn last september (it’s still there.) also the valerie project, and the terribly, terribly named funky nassau compilation.
matt baldwin - paths of ignition (amazing guitar record that covers neu! and judas priest)
bob martin - midwest farm disaster (criminally underlooked ‘72 folk/country/rock record just reissued)
sun kil moon - april (kozelek’s best in ages)
boscoe - s/t (numero group continues to bring it with this amazing chicago avant-funk band w/ a gil scott-heron political bent)
birigwa - s/t (rad reissue of private press jazz/folk lp from ugandan cat backed by folks from stark reality)
yeah, yeah… i’m stuck in the past.
As cliche as it sounds, you could zip onto everyone’s favorite jailbait hole and find some bands that are completely off everyone’s radar and make some suggestions. I find a shit ton of great stuff on there just digging around… but I like poppy happy electro stuff so…
I like you guys no matter what though, my first stop every morning, though i wish you would do more, I like this band you’ve never heard of and then i race to buy it because it rocks.
You guys are responsible for like half of my last 50 purchases.
@iantenna: That sun kil moon album is bad ass! So glad i picked that one up.
@NeverEnough: who do you think was the dreamiest? i like simon the bass player.
@Pebbles Flintsone: GARFIELD-ROLL’D
The best random tiny indie bands I have seen live in the past few months, non-local division: Fishboy, Vampire Hands, Deer Tick, Daniel Francis Doyle, Seth Sherman, Abracadaver and At Shiloh.
@Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee: yes. i will take a slice of that as well. twilley, 20/20, bram tchaikovsky, toms, records. yup.

Their 2007 “Searching For Rick Rubin” mixtape is definitely interesting, if not necessarily great.
Shack!
Oh! Martin Newell!
Mention of first ABC record since 1997!
Critical breakdown of all the Gene records, mentioning how their pretty much self-released last LP Libertine is almost as good as their debut!
Feature on 18th anniversary of the day I bought Trip Shakespeare “Across the Universe” and “November Spawned a Monster” single (featuring “Girl Least Likely To”, which, of course, still rules).
Also: a think piece on how the message board “knowing” comments “Good stuff” and “[he/she] gets it” suck.
Lemme think…
@Al Shipley: What he said about Vampire Hands. Great guys and good music (and live shows).
@bcapirigi: I am all about Johnny Dean. There was a time when I wanted to die via slitting my wrists on his lovely cheekbones.
/fangirl rant
@NickEddy: YAY re: ABC.
The Veldt/Apollo Heights
i’ll continue to rep the outside of indie music scene: Baltimore denizens The Death Set’s new album “Worldwide” is retardedly happy synthpunk, and a track from Bmore club mutant Blaqstarr’s new EP that’s supposed to come out leaked last night, and is awesome. It sounds like an grimier version of Lil Scrappy’s “No Problems”. This guy’s always making interesting stuff, so I’m pretty excited.

The new album by the Chap is incredible. So, for that matter, are the old albums by the Chap.
And I third the nomination of the Sun Kil Moon album.
Dimd Dim: Bulgarian surfer guy who paints, makes children’s book illustrations and cutesy beats. He’s a lot like ‘Land of the Loops’, but a bit more Hawaiian. He also either is, or collaborating with an artist who just makes ukelele music with singers from around the world.

J-POP COVERAGE.
J-Pop’s totally off the hook these days, finally defying the wall-o-sound bouncy KAWAI! stereotypes it had a decade ago, although SMAP is still around, but they now totally rule too.

“>What A Feeling - part of a triple single release called 60s 70s 80s, even though none of the tracks sound 60s, 70s, or 80s.
@Ned Raggett: If you Google Menswe@r your review from 1999 is on the first page, by the way.
How about a study of the work of Nintendo composers Hirokazu “Hip” Tanaka and Koji Kondo?
I prefer the former, but the latter is definitely more of a heavy on the scene.
How about a “The One That Got Away” feature? That would give ma an excuse to babbly incoherently about The Geraldine Fibbers.
@Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee: lol, I kinda did that at this link:

(Sorry if this is a repeated comment. Idolator is acting a little funky in my browser today.)
Colby O’Donis
Maybe a section where books by musicians are deconstructed? I’d love to see Ned Raggett’s dissertation of Motley Crue’s “The Dirt”.
2 new Soundway compilations: “Nigeria Special” - [www.soundwayrecords.com] - and “Nigeria Disco Funk Special” - [www.soundwayrecords.com]
Meh. I’m not feeling the whitefolks’ feeble attempts at bouncing the rubble of American popular music this week.
Luckily there’s some new niceness from Nigeria to listen to.

@NeverEnough: Hmm yeah that daydreamer? song was pretty catchy. (was it daydreamer or daysleeper?)
Also, you might wanna brush up on your Mandopop and Cantopop sensations for the Olympics this summer. Sa Ding Ding will be singing at the opening ceremonies. Embrace your future Chinese overlords, you American running dogs:
@moomintroll: ‘Daydreamer’, which is now stuck in my head.
Almost forgot The Fear and Trembling:
You nailed it on the initially embedded video: more Bun B.
Particularly a critical appraisal of his cameos.
(last man on the track)
Shit, even rap cameos in general. You look back forty years, how somebody like Ry Cooder or Billy Preston would be brought in as a studio hitman, and the run of verses Mystikal dropped in the late 90’s is rather comparable. Shit, I know it’s the only reason I still own a copy of Big Ed’s “The Assassin”.
You should post a lot of these ideas. Or I can just read them. I need to be washed from my 2 days of Bamboozle.
@bcapirigi: If you Google Menswe@r your review from 1999 is on the first page, by the way.
I’m not surprised by that information.
@mackro: J-Pop’s totally off the hook these days
What he said. Follow all links.
@AL: The Veldt/Apollo Heights
Echoing this one FOREVER.
@NeverEnough: I’d love to see Ned Raggett’s dissertation of Motley Crue’s “The Dirt”.
Hmmm….
(Book non-recommendation: Rock On by Dan Kennedy.)
@exposition: 2 new Soundway compilations
Both great, first one knocks it out of the park.
@NeverEnough: Oh yeah, I remember now…I moved to the U.S from the U.K in ‘96 right when that song came out. I remember being all snooty about it and thinking they were jumping on the bandwagon a bit. It’s a great song though, a little bit Pulp, a little bit Blur.
