Disturbed Strike A Pose, Horrify Dillinger Escape Plan Guitarist

Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weiman recently described watching body-piercing enthusiasts Disturbed practice their turn-turn-kick-turns before a show in England. “[They were] practicing where they were going to walk and when they were going to put their leg up on the monitor and pose. That was weird for us. There are times where I don’t even know where I am.” Hey dude, maybe if you worked on your on-stage theatrics you’d be as big as they are! Don’t hate just cuz you’re not down with the sickness! Oooh-wah-ah-ah-ah!

I’ve flipped through a few Disturbed YouTubes, and sadly haven’t found much in the way of melodramatic stances. This posing issue is probably just a lighting thing. Here they are performing “Just Stop” in Kuwait for Operation MySpace.

And here’s Dillinger Escape Plan in comparison. The big difference seems to be that their singer goes past the edge of the stage, so he can yell with his people and get caught in a mosh or something.

I’m not saying “hey, don’t make fun of Disturbed.” Please, let’s. I just refuse to believe this is as lame as they get during soundcheck.

Is it wrong to think thad Disturbed’s singer is kinda-sorta hot in an incredibly twisted in sick way?

    Yes.

    It’s definitely wrong.

I saw Disturbed at a festival and they clearly timed all of their positions.

Dillinger is the best live band on the planet. The end.

There is a very disturbing (pun not intended) trend here where it might look like I’m defending Disturbed. I’m not. I’ve got nothing against them, but they’re not my type of music. That said, I see nothing wrong with a band wanting to be sure they can put on a good show for people who paid hard earned cash to come see them live.

I’ve seen plenty of bands that put no effort into their stage show and it shows. Sloppy performance doesn’t make me want to see them live again. Prince puts his band through famously brutal hours of rehearsal to be sure everyone is in exactly the right place at the right time both physically and musically. So did Zappa. I hardly think that makes them lesser artists.

Seriously, what’s wrong with pre-show rehearsal? I’m genuinely curious. I guess Dillinger are so busy trying to figure out how they can jam one more riff or “surprising” sonic idea into their songs to waste time on presentation.

nothing’s wrong with it - it’s just sort of illustrative of the differences between a band like Dillinger and Disturbed. it’s like when you’re in the church easter play and you’re like, “sweet, i get to wear a roman hat,” and you look over and Jesus is self-applying from his own makeup kit. not bad - just weird.

For me, I like how Dillinger comes across as an non-contrived release of raw energy and emotion live. Sure, they’ve got all those technical parts and disjointed beats in their songs, but seeing them live is like seeing a great hardcore band rather than Dream Theater.

Don’t both those bands go “dvdh-dvdh-dvdh-dvdh, YEAH! dvdh-dvdh-dvdh” Dr. Dillinger - - heal thyself.

This might be a better Dillinger video to share:

I’d love to hate up on Disturbed here, but they’ve gotta have something going for them, even if it is showgirl moves. I can, however, understand why it is alienating to a band not depending on that, though I often wonder if DEP depends on beer to pull of their live show… innebriation vs. choreography… aren’t both planned in a way?

Let’s point out how not contrived we are by show how contrived these guys are! Oh god, neither of us is relevant!

Dillinger live + earplugs = good times

I like DEP when they get catty.
