M83’s Cultural Saturation Moment Is On The Horizon

After seeing this Urban Outfitters ad, I’m giving M83 three years to fill the majority of a chart-topping movie soundtrack with their increasingly accessible post-shoegaze swoon and/or enjoy a fluke top 10 hit in the manner of T’Pau.

I’m not saying this stuff isn’t gorgeous, catchy and total bait for 4AD-obsessed adolescents of all ages (putting them in the videos will make it easier for directors of teen movies to realize the potential). I’m just saying this road leads to T’Pau.

Maybe a collabo cover with Rihanna? Hey, I dream big.

Ain’t nothing wrong with T’Pau. Or at least that song. (I’ve had my squabbles over people regarding M83 but they’ve definitely gotten better over time.)

better over time?? He layed down one of the best albums of the decade on his 2nd (official) try. Saturdays=Youth is solid but Before the Dawn Heals Us is solidest. !

What the hell Gonzo? urban Outfitters??

@Ned Raggett: Thank you! I was about to kinda raise my hand and ask if we were supposed to consider T’Pau (or at least, again, this song) a BAD thing.

I never can tell when my poptimism rolls into just bad taste.

Before watching the video, I thought this was going to be a home-run of images and music. And the beginning, with the washed-out visuals and flares of light fit the song really well.

But as the video progressed, and they realized they were trying to sell product, there was – for me, anyway – a total disconnect between what I was seeing and what I was hearing.

The images just weren’t gauzy and desaturated enough to fit with the song. Sad.

And I agree with dukkookim; while Saturdays = Youth is great, Before The Dawn Heals Us is INCREDIBLE.

Before the Dawn is actually where I started to come around on them, so.

If you close your eyes and listen, you’ll get thirsty for room-temperature tap water. Not sure why.
