What, you didn’t honestly think I was going to let the retirement of Major League Baseball’s No. 1 metal fan/Belle and Sebastian muse pass without comment, did you? Not a chance. (Besides, something had to break up the Idol coverage.) See you at the ceremony retiring No. 31, duder! Hope the Mets management can get Zakk Wylde to play you off. So now he can finally get some alone time with Sam Champion?
I bet there was way more press at his “I swear, I’m not gay, for reals” press conference a few years ago.
The first time I heard Belle and Sebastian singing about Mike Piazza my head almost exploded. I mean, what are the odds that a Scotish group would reference the sexuality of an American baseball player? That was just strange. I believe the song also references the Willie Mays statue outside the Giants home park (whatever telecom currently owns the naming rights). Again, pretty unexpected.
That being said, as a Dodger fan, I believe that the trading of Mike Piazza was the beginning of the end of the “Dodger Way.” I always hated seeing Piazza in a Mets uniform, so fuck you Fox.
I always liked Mike Piazza, he was a good player and cool dude, Even though he did play for the Dodgers. Now there’s Mike Napoli though, so my spot for a cool Italian catcher is checked off.
He’ll be on tour with Anthrax in no time.
