David Cook’s Coronation Song: Prepare For the Deluge

32311.jpg David Cook’s coronation song, “The Time Of My Life,” is up on PopEater now. And it… sounds like a Goo Goo Dolls song. OK, it sounds like a Goo Goo Dolls song with super-treacly lyrics and a keyboard “inspired” by early E Street Band tracks, but that chorus? Talk about plucking an “Iris.” (Maybe this means Johnny Rzeznik is still in Simon Fuller’s good graces? After all, he was actually a decent judge on The Next Great American Band, and Randy is clearly way past his sell-by date…) Anyway, I suspect this song is going to be all over the radio stations playing in your local doctor’s waiting rooms and offices that blare radios playing “the music everyone wants to hear” by, oh, 2 p.m. or so. So why not spend the first pre-caffeine jolt minutes of your day rewatching Cook’s Guitar Hero commercial instead? At the very least, it makes at least one of the reasons why he triumphed over his younger rival very, ahem, clear.

    I thought both of the songs the 2 Davids chose from the amateur songwriting contest were horrible. Archuleta’s was a little bit better, as the judges agreed with me,…Oh Wait hold on, I wanna make sure i know what i’m talkin about im gonna go listen to the Cook song “The Time of My Life” again, hold on

    Alright, no offense to the person who wrote this song,…(if you’re reading this tell yourself that i’m a bitter failure and i’m jealous, and just brush me off like dandruff) BUT, I just dont care for this song. The commenter was right who pointed out about the lyric about “Looking for that magic rainbow on the horizon”,…the lyrics are pretty horrible, and the melody or music isn’t especially breath taking either. It’s a shame the 2 Davids were forced to sing such crappy songs with so much riding on this. Having said that, very few people are writing good songs anymore, it’s hard to understand what the problem is…perhaps we are a “generation lost in space” as Don McClean once said. Anyway, there are also some good articles at [jviz.blogspot.com] that can perhaps help sort through this American Idol insanity

    Oh EEEWW! I’m glad I missed that commercial last night; it was bad enough that D.C. forgot to button his shirt all the way down at the end of the finale.

    It’s no “There But For The Grace of Clive”, but the odds on this song become a prom staple for the next year seem pretty high, don’t they? It’s certainly better than many past coronation songs (that isn’t saying much), but after that line about “Looking for that magic rainbow on the horizon”, I kept waiting for him to sing about riding into the sunset on his unicorn, or something…

    @Thierry: becoming.

    @Thierry: the rainbow line killed me last night. How any of the mock coronation song lyrics floating around the tubes missed out on “rainbows” is beyond me.

    I think this guy is horrible really…anti-rock if it could be called…

    I thought it was absolutely atrocious, which is exactly what I expected. There’s a reason that America’s ‘amateur songwriters’ are amateurs. They suck.
