I had the unfortunate experience recently of reading a forensic police report examining child porn found on a defendant's computer. It related the appearance of the genitals to developmental stages and approximate age ranges. This is key where the person is not locatable and the defense is the person is over 18 but just looks really young. I don't know how well that sort of expert testimony works at trial, though.
