The picks for older punk bands are either cliche (tv party for black flag, holiday in cambodia for dead kennedys, institutionalized for suicidal, bitchen camero for dead milkmen)or mid to late career period (x, the clash, social distortion, pretenders, meat puppets, husker du). The list is better on the ramones and pistols (and great to see x-ray spex), but it's as if there's no real love for early punk, unless it's a one-off goofy hit or at a point where the band tamed down a bit. I am happy to see 80's by killing joke, though.

While I feel the same way about bands from my youth seeming trite and lame nowadays (can you hear me, The Nixons?), I have to say that Hum still makes me want to go out there and blow something up. In a good way.

Shudder to Think's "Ex French T-Shirt" was probably the strangest song to be on Q101 in the 90s, but i'm probably the only one who thinks it was also one of the best.

@owenmeany: Actually, I just put together a list of "90s Alternative Awesomeness." It was restricted to the songs that would've played on my suburban "modern rock" station between 92 and 98 (middle school - high school), so I don't think the majority of the songs would even make this type of canon. I actually found myself digging up the blatant cash-in one-hit wonders and post-grunge also-rans more than the "great" songs of the period.
