Um... where's Muse?

Also, for a list about "guitar" rock, it's pretty light on the metal. I guess it's to be expected that they'd only include Sabbath and Metallica, but still.

They did such a good job accounting for hardcore and everything that that was antecedant to. Truly, a magazine that knows its way around youthful adrenaline in all it's agressive permutations. The sidebar on Derek Bailey and his innovations was also superb. In no way could I ever bring myself to insinuate that these great journalists made this list by scissoring up the manual to Guitar Hero, dumping the names in that contrived, jackassey train engineer hat that Omar is wearing, and pulling at random until they had 20 or so songs that they could fill in the blanks around with pet favorites they knew they could squeeze a paragraph out of.

"Typically, RS puts an image of Jimi Hendrix on the cover of any such big guitar extravaganza, but perhaps his visage is no longer the automatic sales tonic it was for so many years."

That was my first thought when I saw the cover- haven't we done this before, with Hendrix? Second thought was- ew, ew, ew, who's the other guy? And then I read the caption and I was pleasantly surprised that Rodriguez was included with the usual suspects. But how is "Layla" not high up there?

Can someone tell me what the token non-rock songs on the list are? Like anything Charlie Christian did with Benny Goodman or some Wes Montgomery or Django or Andrés Segovia or...

Or should I just assume that since this is Rolling Stone, it is implied only rock, B.B. King and maybe a Prince tune qualify?

@natepatrin: It's hard to expend too much energy getting mad at Rolling Stone's "token cool kid" choices. They probably have one aging hipster nephew, and asked him to name a band that the youngsters think is cool.

Can we make a magazine where we totally misrepresent the 60's? Not because I don't love me some classic rock, but because it would be hilarious to see Rolling Stone and their audience fume. We can say things like "'Don't Pass Me By' is the best song the Beatles ever wrote." Ooh that would be so much fun!

I can't think of nothing worse than navigating through 40 pages of this muck.

Article brought the hearty chuckles as well. My ego is compelling me to point out that I thought the exact same thing re: Ray Davies, but then again so did probably anyone else with ears and not named Ray Davies.

Reading the Rolling Stone list is more trouble than it's worth. I'm on page 7 and only song nine. That magazine is super-annoying and obsolete, but I do love that the Kinks made it up to #4.

-"Maggot Brain" at #60? Instead of, shit, #5? I keep thinking maybe I overstate my case too often that Eddie Hazel is one of the finest guitar players ever, and then a list like this shows up and reminds me that I should probably keep bringing it up at every opportunity until people actually start paying some damn attention.

-Stevie Ray Vaughan? A dollar-store Albert King.

-So is Blue Oyster Cult just an SNL punchline now? 'Cause before Walken and Ferrell came along, "Don't Fear the Reaper" was less about cowbell and more about holy fucking shit Buck Dharma melting your face.

-That dude in my icon? Phil Lynott. Phil played bass for a band called Thin Lizzy, who kinda did some reasonably decent stuff with guitars every now and then.

-And enough bitching about '70s rock -- where the christ is Built to Spill?
