A late entry to the tournament, “Love Is Gone” achieved its berth because over the past four days it has become completely inescapable from New York’s summertime agora–it blared over the PA at Shea Stadium on Saturday, oozed out of the radio at a bodega later that day, and has seemingly been in permanent 6:50 a.m. rotation on our local top-40 station, as it’s been playing at the moment my alarm has gone off every morning since last week. And it’s easy to see why, as it brings together a Foreigner-ready chorus with an electro breakdown that will lure in the kiddies. Why no one has thought of that combination as generation-spanning radio gold before is beyond me, but don’t be surprised if you see David Cook try to pull off the same trick when his album’s about to come out. As an Italian-American, I thought the whole thing was kinda barfy.
@Chris Molanphy: As a pasty white man of primarily scottish descent, I am perplexed as to how this is “goom-bah”. What do you mean, exactly?
OMG, Z100’s playing this thing like the fate of the world depends on it. I can’t imagine it would play well out of the Tri-State Area, however - it’s got a certain goombah ehtnic-ness (I can say this, I’m half paisani) that wouldn’t play in Chicago.
Huh. I like it. Thank god it’s an original tune, or it would have veered into horrible DJ Sammy “Heaven” territory. Definitely grabbing this one for karaoke.
