joy-division-zune.jpgJoy Division rocked futilely in the face of a cold, uncaring world before its leader could take it no longer. The good people at Zune can relate to that tragic spirit, and are celebrating the band with a limited edition Zune player that reuses the artwork Peter Saville created for Unknown Pleasures. “It’s a tribute to deep respect for graphic design that lives on through artists like Peter Saville, and to independent film-makers that believe in more than just commercial success. Ultimately, it’s a tribute to the self-belief and self-expression that inspires true authentic art,” said Zune’s General Manager of Global Marketing. Much like Factory Too. [SPIN]

Mickey Mouse and Joy Division: The mash-up T-shirt
Pitchfork is frothing at the mouth over this unholy repurposing of the Joy Division pulse-wave cover of "Unknown Pleasures." It seems to be real -- it's listed in the Disney store's online catalog, and unless this is a masterstroke of a website ...

Is this supposed to get me to buy a Zune now?

  2. My Friend Edward  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2008

Unsurprisingly, the article is surrounded by Zune ads.

@loudersoft: I own (and use) a Zune. It’s actually pretty decent if you use the subscription service.

While I don’t actually need this new one, I must say that that album art looks awesome in pretty much any context you squeeze it into.

These satirical posts are hilarious! A Joy Division edition Zune, the very notion!

  5. Jupiter8  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2008

Wow, that’s good marketing-if I owned a Zune I’d probably want to hang myself too!

    Young.

    Angular.

Poorly/expensively marketed by the parent company.

Destined to experience tragedy within three years of inception.

Joy Division and Zune: perfect together.

    @Chris Molanphy: Awesomely-said!!

Zune sounds a lot like those “independent film-makers that believe in more than just commercial success”. Looking at the artists they choose to promote (The Shins, Rogue Wave, Joel Ortiz, Joy Division, etc), they seem to be trying to be far too “indie” for their own good.

For a bit more success, they should prbly jump on the iPod bandwagon and start using bands like Coldplay as a marketing tool.

Um… I kind of hate myself for writing that last sentence.

Ah crap.. I guess I’m gonna buy one. I’m too much of a Saville and Joy Division fan.

  11. Captain Wrong  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2008

BUT DOES IT HAVE A FAC NUMBER?!?!?!?!?!

  12. Halfwit  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2008

@Captain Wrong: Oh snap! Vital question.

OK, I know this is kind of a simple-minded attitude, but seriously, anyone with the title “General Manager of Global Marketing” should never utter the phrase “a tribute to the self-belief and self-expression that inspires true, authentic art.” Admittedly, pretty much nobody should ever utter claptrap on that level, but it goes down all the harder this way.

Not that I blame them for wanting to hook themselves onto the awesomest album art ever, but y’know, just issue a press release that says “This thing looks damn cool. Don’t you want one?” THAT’s true and authentic marketing art right there.

“It’s a tribute to deep respect for graphic design”

it’s that bit that trips me up. A tribute to deep respect?
