Idolator’s Summer Jam Tournament Cooks Up Some American Pork & Beans

americanrain.jpgOur quest to find the quintessential summer jam of 2008 continues with some lighter-than-air R & B and the latest comeback single by a band every Idolator reader seems to have an opinion on. (Tomorrow, we’ll have our final two first-round polls, and then round two–which will include excitement and arguing!–begins next week.) After the jump, the poll, the clips, and the arguments.

I’m starting to dislike Weezer, but I’m also starting to think Weezer wants me to dislike them.

“American Boy” is pretty great, and I would definitely set it beside an Aztec Camera track on a mix or two (beach time allowing, of course), for sure! Because summertime is always Aztec Camera time - especially when Ivor Cutler introduces their video!

It’s been months and I still haven’t tired of “American Boy.” It’s so…charming. And winning. “Magnificent” is pretty great, too.

“American Boy” reeks of Coppertone! And the killer thing is, it’s not even the best track on her album. By a long shot.

Damn it, you’ve made me choose between two songs I actually like. That hurt.

That Estelle track is so my jam.

If Estelle does take this handily, then I’m through with the internet*

Q: Who killin’ them in the U.K.?
A: Everybody gonna say ‘you, K.’

between kanye and the dead yak he’s calling a peacoat and weezer’s, uh, everything, i couldn’t decide which video was more visually repulsive.

that said, both of the songs are sort of okay, although estelle could have benefitted from a lot less kanye and weezer could have maybe gone through one or two more drafts of the lyrics. both catchy, though.

Every time Hear “American Boy”, I fall a little bit more in love with Estelle. I’m not saying I would leave my GF for her, but I’d definitely think about it.

this is the strongest match up thus far, it’s a tough choice. but i’m gonna go with estelle, i think, if only because it seems to a have a more distinctly “summer” vibe, while that weezer song could have been released anytime in the year

Estelle is def poppin her colla on “American Boy,” though I can do without all of the Kanye. He gets enough shine on his own.

Not a huge fan of the new Weezer song, but “American Boy” is too slick and a half for me, and not in a good way.
