AP080501045530.jpgIn what I see as a pretty unsurprising development but the Times Of London sees as something that “contains much symbolic significance,” Bob Dylan has endorsed Barack Obama’s presidential candidacy. “Well, you know right now America is in a state of upheaval,” he told the Times. “Poverty is demoralizing. You can’t expect people to have the virtue of purity when they are poor. But we’ve got this guy out there now who is redefining the nature of politics from the ground up…Barack Obama. He’s redefining what a politician is, so we’ll have to see how things play out. Am I hopeful? Yes, I’m hopeful that things might change. Some things are going to have to.” [Times Online via RS]

Just what Obama needs- another endorsement from someone prone to go on wacky Christian-themed rants.

Honestly, I’m glad Obama won, but is he really “redefining the nature of politics”? If anything, I’d say the unusually confrontational style of Bush-era politics (from both sides) was the anomaly and Obama’s rise is just the reflection of things balancing out. Apparently there’s this obligation in US politics to talk about your candidate as the Second (or First, for the Jews in the audience) Coming instead of, you know, taking a more sober view.

@Maura Johnston: Nah, Dylan was neither here nor there for me. It just gives them a reason to post some “hey, maybe they’re not so bad after all” sentiment with a respected name attached. It’s not just a few people hoping anymore. His nomination shows that talk may actually turn to action.

Maybe it’s not so unsurprising considering the perception of American people around the world.

Point taken. But did you really think that Bob Dylan was going to go McCain?
