Actually, the three Idol finale songs were available for one total week, but the week was spread between two different charting weeks (Thursday through Wednesday). So, the record-breaking week, DCook's older songs were available through Wednesday, and his finale songs and single were available Thursday through Sunday (for charting purposes). This week, the single was available for all 7 days, but the three finale songs were pulled on Wednesday.

One possibility, based on arcane digital-sales stuff I've read in Billboard: like many e-retailers, Apple might book and report some of its song sales late, after folks' credit cards are charged, in which case a few thousand sales might have fallen into the start of the next tracking week. But that's just a theory.

That sounds about right to me. I usually don't get an e-mail notification about an iTunes charge, or any sign of it on my bank statement, until at least a couple days, sometimes more, after I've actually bought and started listening to the song.

@Ned Raggett: DING! I still see JJ included on "one-hit-wonder" shows even though their second hit peaked at No. 4. But then, it's an easy song to forget.

I was just saying to Maura, "Real Real Real" was one of the last payola'd hits of the pre-SoundScan era, from one of the most payola-happy labels of the early '90s, SBK (they brought you Vanilla Ice and Wilson Phillips). After spending a long, slow six months breaking "Right Here, Right Now" at Top 40 radio the (mostly) old-fashioned way, one station at a time, they slammed "Real Real Real" onto Top 40 playlists in a few swift weeks, milking JJ's temporarily high profile.

I recall vividly that in November 1991, when Billboard made the monumental switch from the old Hot 100 (phone reports, fudging, payola) to the new Hot 100 (SoundScan for sales, BDS for airplay), "Real Real Real" fell like a stone. Clearly a big chunk of the radio stations that, in September and October, claimed to be power-playing it, actually weren't playing it much at all.

@Rob Murphy: Because I don't normally like to make "serious" guesses on blind items, and on the outside chance my serious guess is wrong, I'll now return to making jokey guesses in the hopes of producing a least a few grins...
