Seasons And Labels Change, But The Vines Stay The Same

Did you think the mushmouth bubblegrunge merchants Vines were going to stop writing the same songs over and over again just because they got dropped from Capitol/EMI? Hell, no! Their new single “He’s A Rocker” is a prelude to the July release Melodia, which is only coming out in Australia. (Most intriguing song title: “Jamola.”) The video opens with an old French man describing his love of rock before tapdancing, then pans to the band saying the word “rocker” over a chord progression I’m fairly sure they’ve grappled before as women in leotards dance, couples make out, and people walk dogs in a circle. It’s allegedly influenced by the work of Stanley Kubrick, but I’m missing the connection. [YouTube]

Ok, this is slightly off topic, but these two bands are always linked in my mind — Whatever happened to Jet? While The Vines would write the same song over and over again, at least it was their song. Jet just wrote other people’s songs over and over again. “Hey, there comes the Beatles tune. Oh yeah, AC/DC is up next.” etc. Not that I’m dying for more Jet’s not-the-same-as-The-Hold-Steady bar-band sound, but it seems like the sort of thing Clear Channel would play on the 5 stations they own in each market.

@How do I say this … THROWDINI!: I imagine their on hiatus while their guitar player finds some more hats that make me want to punch him in the throat.

It’s a testament to Jet that, and I’m not kidding, I had to look them up to remember who they were. And now I remember their guitar player’s hats. Old? Asshole? Well, only you can decide for sure, but now I, too am curious as to their whereabouts.

@How do I say this … THROWDINI!: Agreed, the Vines did manage to maintain some sense of identity around the rise of similar-sounding bands like The Strokes, The Hives, and Jet.

I think it’s very clear that Jet wouldn’t have had nearly the success that they did, had they gone with their original founding name, The Jets…

    Did they suddenly gain talent?
