jilly.jpgJill Sobule on Katy Perry’s deathless “I Kissed A Girl,” which nicks the title of her 1995 alt-rock hit: “Katy Perry’s song is a kind of catchy party song, although I will admit that I do smile when a critique mentions my version in a more favorable light. Is that wrong?” Not at all, Jill, but just be aware that any “favorable light” shone your way by this site is the result of Katy’s song being the worst thing ever (summer ‘08 edition), and yours being a mildly aggravating bump in the radio road while waiting for “Lump” to come on. i liked jill sobule, and that whole album was kind of fun (except for the song about bosnia, which was kind of serious.) more so than, say, patti rothberg.

=( I personally loathed that song, along with the ‘What’s Going On?’ one. Just summed up the high-school years for me when ever tech and dance major was blasting that crap twenty four seven.

I’m sure she’s talented as hell, but dear heaven above I hate that song.

I’m scared to tell anyone I have not ever liked this song because I’m fearful of being attacked as a “woman hater” by commenters.

I don’t like it either, and though I’m also not a “woman hater,” I’ll voluntarily take the heat for us both. I can take it!

i haven’t been following this chick, but this story piqued my interest so i followed some links, and i’d like to confess that i just watched the video for “UR so gay” and it made me giggle.

Having not heard anything previously except her long-ago hit, I saw Jill perform a couple of years ago and was very impressed.

I’m neither a woman hater nor a “I Kissed A Girl”(Sobule) hater. It’s catchy and positive, just not my type of music. That said, I did see her live once at Pride Fest in Denver and she was a great performer.

I never liked Sobule’s “Kissed” because it came at the peak of a sub-genre of polite post-alternative music I dubbed “Friends Rock.” Think Hootie, Sister Hazel, Deep Blue Something, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Meredith Brooks. (Dave Matthews is too big for the genre; the Rembrandts are too small.) It was this sort of stopgap pseudo-rock between early-’90s bubblegrunge and late-’90s Lilith, and around 1995-96 I just found it oppressive.

    Specific enough?

@Chris Molanphy: Wow. You nailed it.

But, now, thanks to Maura, I can’t get that Presidents of the USA song “Lump” out of my head. Thanks for that!
