I Boldly Predict This Isn’t As Good As “British Steel”

lessinterestingthanflosstradamusmoresothannastradamus.jpgEvery week, we round up the all-important, all-summarizing last sentences of the biggest new-music reviews. This time around, we look at the writeups for Judas Priest’s double album Nostradamus, which hits stores today.

• “This one kills me to write, but the great JUDAS PRIEST has flopped with Nostradamus. While I’m sure honor to the legacy of this great band will cause people to be kind to the band when reviewing it, calling it as it is you have to say that this album is simply unappealing to listen to. The sad thing is that with all the expectation on it and following such a great album with ‘Angel Of Retribution,’ Nostradamus is simply a bust. There’s no other way to say it.” [MetalEater]

• “I loved the album–I dare not compare it directly with another Priest album–as the songs on it never manage to cause the same amount of excitement–in the course of a single song’s duration–as with the bands previous mega hits, but taken as a whole–Nostradamus is just massive and impressive. Massively impressive!” [Metal Invader]

• “A few infectious melodies, such as ‘Pestilence and Plague,’ do survive the cod operatic structure and glutinous orchestration, but what gets lost in the portentous kerfuffle is the band’s three-minute-pop side. Without it, their meisterwerk marks a new extreme in self-indulgence.” [The Telegraph]

• “From simple soldier he will attain to Empire, from the short robe he will grow into the long. Brave in arms, much worse towards the Church, he vexes the priests as water fills a sponge.” [Nostradamus]

It reminds me of Sad Wings of Destiny, which I believe is their greatest work, before they fell into their own cliche of Breaking the Law pop metal. I applaud their attempt at making a piece of art, rather than simply catering to the fist pumping 'hits' fans. Plus, much better than anything Maiden has churned out since the mid 80's...take that, Dickinson!

I just know he's a hopping mad leprechaun over JP beating them to this idea.

i love judas priest... this record however, which i bought
yesterday, is as camp as a row of tents. this campness will polarize
listeners immediately. my boyfriend, threatened divorce if i didn't
turn it off; i, however, kind of love it.

"portentous kerfuffle"? Isn't that one of Harry Potter's professors?

  • NeverEnough

    That cover rules.

More importantly, how is Halford holding up in the leather gear these days? Half the (gay) men I know in LA over the age of 45 look like Halford. (The other half look like prematurely-aged Abercrombie models.)

But will it be as good as Steel Dragon's last album?

  • FionaScrapple

I will remove all expectation and listen to the album with an open mind. I will then relate my experience and knowledge to the masses as impenetrable truth. For I am the lord of all that is Metal.

"Temples will be set up again as in ancient times, and the priest will be restored to his original position and he will begin his whoring and luxury, and will commit a thousand crimes."
