After months of buildup, Jay-Z played his much-discussed headlining set at the Glastonbury Festival last night, and he opened it with a special dedication to Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, who had said that Jay was an inappropriate addition to the Glasto bill because it was “built on a tradition of guitar music.” Jay strolled out with a guitar, strumming and warbling along to “Wonderwall,” last-call-on-a-long-night-style, before breaking into “99 Problems.” I think this is a way to tell Gallagher “your move,” although I shudder to think what an Oasis cover of “Big Pimpin’” might sound like. Ouch. Is Jay tone-deaf or is that on purpose? Does this mean a Jigga/Blur collabo is in the offing?
I still prefer his version of “Champagne Supernova.”
This is priceless, he brought Summer Jam hijinks to Glastonbury!
@Sam Adams:
Nice! Are ya mad fer it?
I love this more than words can possibly express.
jay-z is the fucking man
Dayaaaam. I just might have 2 stop sippin’ the Haterade. But, um, what up wit the guitar and the Stevie Wonder look? I’m just asking.
I don’t think this will ever not make me LOL.
I know Jay-Z isn’t the first person to mock Oasis by playing Wonderwall ironically, but this is a huge pile of LAWL.
Making fun of Oasis will always be awesome, but it would be a lot better if it wasn’t coming from a guy who is way too into Coldplay.
@tmcmahon2: I think that makes it even more of a “fuck you” to Gallagher. “So, I can’t play a guitar or sing. I’m not even gonna have my band play it. I still rock, asshole.” He didn’t cover Oasis, he sampled them. True hip-hop form.
It would have been more subtle to do “Slight Return” by the Bluetones.
Not gallagher on-topic, but subtler.
Or smash some fruit and stuff on the crowd and say “Take that, Gallagher!” then pause and look confused/scared.
This would have been much cooler if…
*Jay could actually playing guitar. Why bother faking it?
*His band was playing the song. They were just playing the Oasis track in the background which is kind of lame. (Was one of his guitar players strumming along?)
*Jay was able to sing. I mean, wow, that was some tone deafness.
Not that I love Oasis or anything but that was weak.
Is “Back in Black” sampled in the album cut? Because, honestly…I don’t remember that.
