Why Didn't Anyone Tell Me About Ethiopiques At Glastonbury?

ifyourethrowingapartygetyourselfsomeethiopiques.jpgWe covered a bit of the Glastonbury lineup announcement, had our bit about Jay-Z as headliner, even that stupid "upside-down house" tent, but at no point did I hear that an all-star band comprised of those featured on the 23 volumes of the Ethiopiques series would be performing. Not that I would have been able to fly out to England or spend three days in mud/fecal matter-soaked fields, but I would have at least wanted to know, so I could wistfully stare eastward on Saturday dreaming of Mulatu Astatke and his band. I'll get over the pain somehow, but it's some consolation that the act's set is available to watch on BBC's site for a week or so, along with full sets from the Verve, Candi Staton and Massive Attack. • Probably because you guys never cover any world music on idolator... but we world music dorks were all over this shit:

Don't miss Goran Bregovic & The Honest Jon's Review at Avery Fisher this month, either.

  • @Clevertrousers: I'm so absolutely gutted that I'm missing the Honest Jon's revue at Avery Fisher (I live in Chicago...and am broke). I would do anything to go. I heard Damon's going to be performing Mali music (or at least in part with Afel). I really wanted to see the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble too... and of course Candi Staton and Tony freaking Allen!!
    Wahhh
I spent all my "travel" money going to see Monkey: Journey To The West in Charleston last month -which was amazing- (and the obligatory festival outings in Chicago- lolla, pitchfork...)
Luckily there's a record shop here that just started stocking all the Honest Jon's stuff!

  • So, so funny that the BBC video player's volume control goes to 11.

  • @moomintroll: Well if it makes you feel any better, I'm often jealous that I don't live in Chicago, because Mike Orlove programs some truly kick-ass stuff at the Pritzker Pavillion. Hell, he had Goran Bregovic's US debut last year and the debut of the Bachata legends this year... but yeah, the Honest John's Review is gonna kick ass - especially since they added Tony Allen to the lineup (sorry to rub it in)...

  • @Clevertrousers: It's O.k... I keep hoping there'll be a surprise Africa Exprez tent at Lolla, but then I remember that Damon Albarn has forgotton Chicago exists...and it would be in the "Facebook Tent" or something lame that Albarn would never stand for.
