Apparently the folks at Vulture still have the stamina to scroll through the scores of concert pics and peanut-gallery members that populate the heavyweight blog Brooklyn Vegan, because someone over there noticed a recent trend in the site’s endless, nearly wordless documentation of shows: “it seems that summer concertgoers–particularly women–now have to deal with blog photographers and their long-lens cameras.” Yes, the combination of hot weather and hot women has apparently proven to be too much for whoever’s selecting shots for the site these days, resulting in some craziness from all that heat. Quoth Vulture: “It was [Thursday's] recap of Feist’s Prospect Park show that really started to edge into creepiness, with a few long-range shots of random women just hanging out…. We’re sure the Feist fans in question loved checking in at Brooklyn Vegan to see voyeuresque photos of themselves above comments like ‘more pictures of the indie sluts please’ and ‘I’d mushabang those Feist-type girls.’ ” Well, with come-ons like that, how could they refuse? Am I right, ladies?
Of course, the posting of these “atmosphere” shots isn’t wrong on its face; crowd shots at shows do help provide a sense of place, and God knows they at least provide something of a respite from the beardos-with-strats parade that plagues many an indie-leaning blog. But the trend Vulture points out makes one wonder if the site’s trying to goose its traffic the old-fashioned way–a suspicion that’s only furthered by the ever-churning comment section, which is made up of your basic anonymous mouth-breathers who, when taking a break from arguing over the finer points of Andrew WK’s new bar, type things like “i like the preggers chick….god thats hot.”
Apparently taking a lesson from Vulture’s upbraiding, the folks at BV have since started posting pictures of “hot” men as well, which I guess has opened the door for equal-opportunity leering, at least. (Sample comment: “Mmmm.. Good Beefcake in the dodgeballs section..”) And in “things could always be worse” news, BV has a ways to go if it wants to hit the groin-tugging ways of ThatsHipHop.com, which hit up its fanbase with the following come-on over the weekend:

Brooklyn Vegan Now Just Posting Photos Of Random Cute Indie Girls [Vulture]

Heh heh, “mushabang.”
I remember a few weeks ago seeing the photo blog/slideshow from the Village Voice’s Bonaroo coverage, and out of 50 pictures or so, about 30 were of girls in bikinis. And it wasn’t even that voyeurisic. They were all posed and smiling, like it was a facebook photo or something. And there were hardly any photos of bands, except for a few of the Brooklyn hipster fare.
I know the notion of privacy is gone now and we all want to be web stars and have our blogs read etc, but seriously. Don’t even “alternative” outlets have the basic standards to at least be on topic.
And no point over aruging over the finer points of Andrew WK’s bar. Everything that man touchs (with the exception of his TV show, albums, and overall career) is gold.
There was an article in the NYTimes (prescient, I know) a few weeks back about how YouTube could have been run into the ground by porn, and how most sites succumb to skin-flashing in lieu of their original content/intentions. I never met anyone who read Big Brother for the articles, and I don’t know if anyone on BV even listens to music at all anymore, lest it be a way to get into someone’s pants via a hip playlist. Maybe Larry Flynt wants in on the bustling blogosphere?
@Dead Air ummm Dead Air: From what I hear about that bar’s drink prices, the cocktails are gold, too!
Naturally, Dave, as ever, made this a total non-issue by not freaking out and getting all blogistic about it (so refreshing!) — I mean, any other bloggerdouche would have hollered up a storm about how its their right to post hott pics of mushabangable ladies BECUZ IT IS THE INTERNETZ, OK? So, you know — good on him.
Anyway, The Breeders shots are more crowd-focused, not just dude-focused — it was actually nice to see these. Esp. the kids in ear protection. Aww.
I’m bummed the dudes from The Whip aren’t cuter, though. Yeah, yeah. I am that shallow.
Crowd shots are the new upskirt?
@Maura Johnston:
$4 Buds and $6-7 well drinks are pretty much par for the course. Complaining seems centered on a particularly clubland door policy.
I’m a little more worried about those Bon Jovi comments on Brooklyn Vegan. What a bunch of douches. Can’t they think of anything better than to insult people who genuinely dig the music?
@JohnDoe: No.
“Beardos with strats.”
Best.Quote.Ever.
Ladies or pictures of Arnel Pineda. That guy…I’m telling you. What?
Hi. I’m talking to myself. KIND OF.
@JohnDoe: You must be unfamiliar with Brooklyn Vegan comment threads…
