Seems the hodgepodge lineup presented at the Download Festival’s Sunday stop in Los Angeles provided air-conditioned entertainment to only a few thousand people, even though it was filled with retro-ish acts that usually drive people to these things, like the Jesus and Mary Chain and Gang of Four. Will these somewhat inexpensive, multibrand-supported shows be permanently replaced with free shows promoting one brand exclusively? Even I might be convinced to sit through Yeasayer to hear my emo faves Brand New (above). [LA Times]

Thank you Dan for admitting how great Brand New is. They don’t get nearly enough blog love.
My Gran’pa’s 90th birthday party was promoted better than this event was.
@owenmeany: That being said, you did hire some excellent strippers for that smaller scale event.
@owenmeany: Yeah but grandparents birthday parties haven’t suffered as much media fragmentation. You usually only have a few grandparents and, thus, don’t have to choose between 40 of them each summer.
@owenmeany: Seriously. JAMC, Gang of Four and Tapes ‘n Tapes in my own backyard and I had no idea.
If you click through the LA Times are article, you’ll see that they describe the lineup as “blog-rock and electro-pop.” How long has “blog-rock” been a recognizable genre?
Brand New had two good records but “The Devil…” was rubbish. The linked song above is a decent track, but this party is over. They should go the way of their non-amigos from LI, Taking Back Sunday, and get obscure. The days of Vagrant and Drive-Thru have been replaced by ed banger and Arts and Crafts, love it or hate it.
